UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB HARTMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO A. H. MOORE, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. ,338,066, dated March 16I 1886.
Serial No. 172,282. (No model.)
'o aZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JACOB HARTMAN, a citi zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Iinproveulent in Fastenings for Railroad-Rails, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a top or plan view of a fastening for a railroad-rail embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 representviews of opposite sides thereof. Fig. 4 represents a horizontal section inline a: x and x x', Fig. 5, all of the said figure, except the parts designated by B B G being on line x rv, and the said parts B B G being on line xx, and shown in position before being adjusted to allow of the insertion of the key. Fig. 5 represents a vertical section in line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 6 represents an end view thereof. Fig. 7 represents a hori zoutal section in line x fr', Fig. 5, the ends of the rails being separated. v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a fastening for a railroad-rail, the construction whereof is such that piercing the rail for spikes is avoided, and the rail is rmly held in position.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a railroad-rail, which is of usual construction. B represents a clamp, which engages with the rail, and C represents a key, which engages with said clamp and is secured to the stringer D, for fastening the rail to the latter.
The clamp B consists of upwardly-projecting lips E E, which embrace the opposite sides of the base of the rail, a plate, F, which is connected with said lips and passes under said base, and a downwardly-projecting lip, G, which embraces the Stringer, the lip G being below the lip E. In the plate F and lip E is a vertical opening, H, through which is passed the upper part of the key (J, the latter having an opening in its lower part for the passage of the screw J, by which the key is connected with the Stringer. The inner faces of the lips E G are inclined, so as to take hold of the rail and Stringer with a wedging effect,
and the inner face of the lip l' has a shoulder, v
E2, which engages with a fiange, A', on the rail A; consequently the rail is prevented from rising from the clamp B. The key is curved, so that its upper end locks with the wall of the lip E', and when it is connected N with the stringer by the screw J the clamp and key are rmly connected, and the key reliably attached to the Stringer, it being evident that the clamp cannot disengage itself from the key, nor the key disconnect itself from the Stringer, and thus the rail is reliably fastened in posit-ion.
In the flange A there are two openings, A2, which coincide with the lugs B', formed in the clamp B by the openings H and shoulder G.
When the rail is placed on the plate F, it is primarily fitted to the lip E, and then lowered to full extent, the portion A3 of the flange A', between the openings A2 thereof, entering the opening H, and the lugs B enter the openings A". The rail or clamp is then shifted or moved lengthwise, whereby one of the lugs B rests on the solid portion of the flange A and another one thereof on the portion A3, thus causing the shoulder E2 of the lip E' to engage with or rest on the ange A of the rail, and the opening H of the plate to coincide with one of the openings A`z of the flange A. Thekey is now passed through the opening H, and likewise one of the openings A, and secured to the Stringer, the fastening ot the rail thus being completed, it being seen that actual spiking of the ra-il is avoided.
I ain aware that it not new to secure a rail by a clamp having a fastening-piece secured thereto by a key, and such I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I. A railroad-rail fastening consisting of a clamp having lips which engage with the rail and Stringer, and provided with a key, which passes through a vertical opening in the clamp and is secured to the Stringer, substantially as described.
2. The clamp B, formed with upwardly-projecting lips E E', a downwardly-projecting lip, G, and a' baseplate, F, in combination and the keyC, interlocking with the wall of with a fastening key, substantially as desaid opening and connectible with a. Stringer, ro scribed. substantially as described.
3. The clamp B havin@ a Vertical opening T 5 H, shoulder E', arid lugs IS. and the rail hav JACOB' HARTMAI" ing` a Harige, A', with openings A2, substan- Witnesseg: tially as and for the purpose set forth. f JOHN A. WIEDERSH'EIM, 4. A clamp having a vertical opening, H, A. P. GRANT..
