ADAM SOHNELL, or HARrsELLs, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR or TWO-THIRDS TO WILLIS A. BARGLIFT AND JAMES L. EoHoLs, or ,SAMELPLAOE.
BED-RAIL FASTENER.
ESPECIF-ICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,442, dated December 15, 1885. Application filed Sept-ember 23, 1885. Serial No. 177,946. (No model.)
.To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM SoHNELL, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Hartsells, in the county of Morgan and State ofAlabama,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Rail Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. My invention relates to improvements in bedsteads, and is intended to provide means whereby the side rail will be prevented from pulling out from the post, and the bedstead thereby coming apart.
It consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a bedstead provided with my int provements, and Figs. 2 and 3 are perspec tive sectional views showing the operation of the same.
A designates the side rail; B, the bed-post, and E the foot-board. The foot-board is se cured in the post in the usual manner. The side of the post opposite that side in which the foot board is secured is mortised, as shown, to-receive the end of the side rail, A. The mortise B is of the peculiar form shown,
the lower wall, B being level, and the upper Wall, B, inclined downwardly toward the middle of the side rail, as shown. The end of the side rail, A, is placed in this mortise, and the upper edge of the rail is cut away or notched, as shown at A, to correspond to the inclination of the upper wall of the mortise B, as will be understood. It will be seen that by this construction when the end of the rail is placed in the mortise the two parts will 5 form a dovetail mortise-and-tenon joint, and it will be impossible to release the side rail from the bed-post by any strain exerted on the said rail in the direction of its length. To separate the side rail and the bedpost, it
is necessary to lift the side rail bodily from engagement with the bed-post in a line at right angles to the direction of its length, as will be understood.
To prevent the side rail being pushed out from the mortise B by the weight of the persons on the bed, I provide the angle-iron O, which is pivoted upon the bedpost above the mortise B and extends down over the same, and is provided with the portion 0, bent to fit the angle or corner of the post, and provided with the slot 0', through which the button D projects and operates. The button D is pivotally secured in the side of the bed-post, and is made of such form as to pass readily through the slot 0 in the operation of the device, which will be readily understood on reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. It is not essential that this button project through a slot in the angle-iron. It could be pivoted so as to fit over the edge of the same.
In Fig. 2 the several parts are shown in the position they would have when the device is in use.
\Vhen it is desired to pack the bedstead for transportation or take it apart for cleaning, 7 the button D is turned to the position shown in Fig. 3, when the angle-iron can be swung up, as shown in Fig. 3, and the side rail readily removed. \Vhen it is desired to put the bedstead together and set it up again, this opera tion is reversed.
It will be seen that I have provided a cheap, simple, and effective device which can be readily operated and is not liable to get out of order. 8 5
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination of the post having a mortise formed in the side thereof, a rail lapped alongside of and having its end fitted in said mortise and interlocked therein to prevent longitudinal displacement, an angle iron pivoted to the side of the post on one side of the mortise over which it extends, and a catch to engage the free end of the pivoted angle-iron, whereby lateral displacement of the rail is prevented, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the post having a ICO mortise formed in its'side, the lower wall of In testimony whereof I affix :iiYFsig'natdr [0 which is level and the upper wall inclined, in presence of twowitnesses. the side rail having a tenoned end conforming to the mortise in which it is seated, an ADAM SGHNELL.
5 angle-iron pivoted to the post on one side of thewortise and extending thereover, and a Witnesses:
catch toengage the free end of the angle J. W. MOORE, iron, substantially as and for the purpose set W. A. BOGER. forth.
