FASTENING FOR BED SLATS.
No; 277,541. Patented May 15,1883.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES- 'ATENT .1 Erica...
FASTENING FOR BED-SLATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,541, dated May 15, 1883. Application filed April 14, 1883. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GASSIMER D. 0. Bow- ERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgway, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use fnl Fastening for Bed-slats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to fastenings for bedslats; and itoonsists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, the object of which is to produce a simple and inexpensive device whereby the bed-slats may be held firmly and securely in position and the sides of the bed prevented from springing apart, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved slat-fastening, showing also the end of a slat ready for adjustment in the same. Fig. 2 is a verti cal sectional view through the sides of a bedstead equipped with my improved slat-fastenings. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken transversely through the slat, and show ing the fastening device in elevation; and Fig. 4c is a bottom view, showing the slat in position.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings designates my improved slat-fastening, which consists, essentially, of a plate, the sides of which are provided with flanges B B to confine the slat (l, the end of which is fitted between the said flanges.
The inner or rear end of the plate A is provided with upward and downward projecting flange-s D and E, the former of which has perforations F to receive the fastening-screws, while the latter serves principally as a brace to enable the fastener or holder to support the strain to which itis subjected. The said flange E also serves as a gage by which the fasteners or holders may be evenly and accurately attached to the side rails of a bedstead. For this purpose the lower edge of the said flange is straight and adapted to register with the lower edge of the side rail, as clearly shown in the drawings.
The under side of the bed-slat is provided at the ends with downturned hooks G, the shanks of which, H, are secured to the under sides of the bed slats by screws, or in any suitable manner.
The plates A are provided with grooves I to accommodate the shanks H of the hooks, and the latter pass through perforations J at the inner ends of the grooves I.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily. understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The slats may with the ordinary notched or recessed side rails, and when in position will beheld securely against an) displacement. They will also prevent the side rails of the bed from springing apart, thereby greatly increasing the strength and adding to the appearance of the bed.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statestially, of a plate having side flanges to confine the sides of the end of the slat, upward and downward projecting flanges at its inner or rear end, and provided with a groove and perforation to receive the fastening-hook and the shank of the same, as set forth.
2. A bed-slat fastener having an upwardlyprojecting flange at its inneror re tr end to receive screws for attaching it to the side railof a bed, and a downwardly projecting flange resting against the side rail, so as to form a brace, and having a straight lower edge registhe bed, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the side rails of a bed, of the herein-described slat-fasteners, consisting of plates having flanges to confine the ends of the slats, n iwardly-projecting fastening-flanges and downwardlyprojecting brace and gage flanges, and provided with a groove and a perforation at the inner end of the same, and the slats havingdowniurned books at their ends, the shanks of which are secured to the under sides of said slats, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have heretoaflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
