UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAGNUS FERNAU, OF FLATONIA, TEXAS.
BEDSTEAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 397,708, dated February 12, 1889.
Application filed August 31, 1888.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAcNUs 'Fnnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flatonia, in the county of Fayette and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead-Ties; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speci fication.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention and is a vertical section. Fig. 2 is a bottom view.
This invention relates to improvements in bed fastenings or ties; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
The object of my invention is to obviate the spreading of the side bars ot' a bed, which allows the bottom slats to fall, especially those near the center of the bed; and I accomplish this object by providing one of the slats, preferably at or near the center, with adjustable keepers.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a side bar of a bedstead, and B is abottom slat, which has its ends resting in, notches C in the ordinary manner.
D is the metal keeper-strap, having near one end a slot-opening,E, through which the 1 bolt F passes to secure the keeper to the slat. The threaded end of the boltis provided with l a thumbmut, G, so that the keeper may be i Serial No. 284,258. (No model.)
readily secured as adjusted to hold the side bar firmly against the end of the slat. The keeper is turned downnardly and outwardly from the slat, and the upwardly-tnrned hook II at its outer end is designed to engage the lower edge of the side bar, as shown.
It is obvious that a keeper is required. at each end of the slat.
.Upwardly-turned lugs or teeth I on the inner end of the keeper-straps are designed to 1 penetrate the slat as the thumb-nut is screwed down, which prevents the keeper from becoming loose.
Having described my claim is- 1'. The bedstead-tie keeper consisting of the bent strap I), slotted near its inner end and bent downward and outward from the slotted portion, the upturned hook at its outer end, and the upturned tooth at its inner end, in combination with a bolt adapted to pass through an opening in the slat, and athumb-nut, substanti ally as specified.
2. The combination, with a bedstead and the perforated slats thereof, of the bent metal keeper I),having a slot, E, a downward and outward bend from said slot, the upturned hook at its outer on d, and the bolt: and thumb-nut fastening, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
