DELAVAN GRANNELL, 0F AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-BOX FASTENINGS.
Speeiicatitn forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,513, dated November 11, 1873; application filed October 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
f Be it known that I, DELAVAN GRANNELL, of Amsterdam, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Paper-Box Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a sectional view of my paper-box fastening. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same.
My invention has relation to means for fastening covers on paper boxes 5 and it consists in a hooked spring-metal fastening, which is secured to the box by means o'f tongues inserted through slits made through its sides or ends, and then spread out laterally, the hooking portion being so arranged as to catch over the cover and hold it on the box, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following is a description of my improvement:
In the annexed drawing, A represents the cover of a paper box, and B the body of the box, both of which are constructed in the usual well-known manner. C C represent two of the improved fastenings applied to the ends of the box, so as to catch over the cover and `hold it safely in place. Each fastening is made of spring metal, stamped out of a sheet in the form represented by Fig. 2. The body b of the fastening has four lateral tongues, c, formed on its edges, and also a lip or hook, a, formed on its upper end. Between the tongues c the edges of the body b are angular; and at the junction of the hooked extension with the upper two tongues c c notches e e are formed for the purpose of allowing these tongues to be,
inserted fully into the box. The angular extensions of the body b also allow the tongues to be inserted well into the bx, and at the same time aiford a broad bearing for the fastening. To apply the fastenings, short slits are made through the box at the proper places, and the four tongues e are bent and forced through them, and then spread out laterally. The upper hooked portions of the fastenings are bent so as to receive the rim of the cover, and to hook over this cover, as shown in Fig. l.
By springing back the hooks the cover can be removed from the body of the box.
of two witnesses.
DELAVAN GRANNELL.
