Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 13, 1910. Serial No. 561,075.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERWIN O. KLANN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fasteners, and more particularly to the class of metallic fasteners which are usually employed for securing together several sheets of paper.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a paper fastener formed with an annular head or ring having a pair of oppositely disposed prongs formed at the inner peripheral edge of the annular head and which are adapted to be inserted through the material to be fastened and bent upwardly into a plane substantially parallel with that of the head so as to force the material between the prongs and head slightly into the U-shaped concavity of the annular head, thus securely fastening the material together and preventing any possible movement of the fastener and consequent enlargement of the openings made by the inserting of the prongs.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a paper fastener comprising an annular U-shaped head. having oppositely disposed prongs projecting upon the inner peripheral edge of the head, each of which is provided with outwardly projecting teats which are adapted, when the prongs are bent outwardly into clamping engagement, to underlie and project toward the central portion of the U-shaped annular head thus providing additional means which'cooperates with the head and prongs thereof to force the material to be fastened well into the annular U-shaped concavity of the head, whereby any possible movement of the fastener after having been applied will be absolutely prevented.
With the above and other objects in view,
which will more fully hereinafter appear,
the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details in the device may be made, within the scope of the claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the fastoner is formed prior to the forming of the U-shaped concavity in the annular head and the bending of the prongs outwardly, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved metallic fastener as it will appear when completed, and Fig. 3 is a central transverse sectional view of the fastener, showing it as it will appear when used to secure a plurality of sheets of paper together.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate like parts throughout the accompanying specification.
In forming the improved metallic paper fastener, the first operation is to stamp or otherwise form the circular fastener blank as indicated by the numeral 1 from a sheet of metal, and simultaneously with the forming of the blank there is formed on opposite sides of its center a pair of oppositely disposed semi-circular openings 2. By the forming of these oppositely arranged semicircular openings 2 a longitudinal and central connecting strip, designated in general by the numeral 3, is provided and simultaneous with the formation of the blank and the openings the longitudinal strip is cut diagonally throughout its length to provide a air of sections or prongs 4 and 5.
The lank above described and used in the formation of the fastener has its outer peripheral portion bulging to provide an annular U-shaped concavity 6. At the same time the U-shaped concavity is formed, the prongs 4 and 5 are bent outwardly at right angles to the plane of the head as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. It is to be noted that each of the prongs 4 and 5 are pressed, simultaneously with the forming of the fastener blank, to provide outwardly projecting teats 7 and 8, which are adapted to directly underlie and project toward the inside of the U-shaped concavity when the said fastener has been placed in applied position, as will be seen very clearly by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawing. It is to be noted that the teats? and 8 are so formed and positioned that after the prongs have been inserted through the sheets of paper or the material to be fastened and bent outwardly in a plane substantially horizontal with that of the head that by the said operation the teats will bear against and bulge the adjacent port-ions of the sheets of paper into the U-shaped annular head, thus cooperating with the prongs to form an additional securing or fastening means. It is to be also noted that when the fastener is in applied position, that the teats lie directly beneath and project into the central portion of the U-shaped concavity of the annular head, and by which arrangement the material to be fastened will be forced into the said U-shaped concavity, causing the outer peripheral edge of the head to firmly bite and bind into the paper, thus securing an effective locking means whereby any and all possible movement of the fastener, after having been secured in position, will be prevented.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of construction and the method of operation of the device, together With the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, and while I have described the principle of operation of the device, I desire to have it understood that such changes of construction and arrangements of parts may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new is:
A paper fastener constructed from a single piece of material and bent upon itself to form a ring, substantially U-shaped in cross section, the inner wall of said ring being formed to provide a pair of diametrically opposed laterally projecting spurs disposed below the said ring and extending beyond the outer Wall thereof, each of the said spurs having a perfectly fiat bottom and an instruck teat arranged in its length and approximately central of the said U- shaped ring, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
