Description

' s. E. MOORE.
- TUB FASTENER.
N0. 360,390. Patented Mar. 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLON E. MOORE, OF SVVANTON, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE \V. SQUIER, OF SAME PLACE.
T U B F A S T E N E R SPIE:QIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,390, dated March 29, 1887.
Application file.l October 1, 1895. Serial No. 178,711. (No model.)
To all whom it may 'concern:
Be it known that I, SOLON E. Moons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swanton, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tub-Fasteners; and I do de-. clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as wil1 en-- able others skilled in the art to which "it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation ofthis invention, and is a side view. Fig. 2 shows the fastener applied to the cover of a tub.
This invention has relation to that class of tub-fasteners in which a metallic strip is employed in connection with nails for fastening the coverv to the body.
The invention consists, in combination with a sheet-metal strip, of a nail having an external annular groove surrounding its body beneath its head, the shank of the nail being of such shape that when it and the strip are forced together the displaced portions of the strips will pass into the groove, as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Before describing the details of construction I desire to say that I am well aware that it is not new to form a tub-fastener from a strip of sheet metal and nails, the latter having an integral collar below its head to form a groove to receive the strip.
Referring by letter to the accompany i ng drawings, D indicates a portion of a tub, which may be of any ordinary construction.
E indicates the fastening-strip,which is composed of sheet metal. This strip I bend as shown, so as to have one branch engage the outer side of the vertical wall of the tub and the/other branch engage the upper side of the cover, as shown.
A indicates the shank of the nailf'or securing the strips to the tub and cover, and B and i ndicate the point and head of the nail. The shank of the nail is preferably round in cross-section, and directly beneath the head is formed an annular groove, E. It will thus be seen that when the nail and strip are forced together a portion of the displaced portion of the strip will pass into the groove in the said nail.
Having described the invention, what I claim is The combination, with a sheet-metal strip, of the nail having an external annular groove surrounding its body beneath i ts head, and the shank A of the nail being of such a shape that when it and the strip are forced together the displaced portions of the strip will pass into the groove, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afli x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
