Description
J. E. KRENTEL.
SHOE PROTECTOR FOR SHOVELS.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.28. 1915.
Patented Sept. 19,1916.
Q Vitmoaeo FEED S JOHN E. KRENTEL, OF ST. TAMMANY, LOUISIANA.
SHOE-PROTECTOR FOR SHOVELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 28, 1915. Serial No. 69,095.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. KRENTEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
ammany, in the parish of St. Tammany, State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Protectors for Shovels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in shoe protectors for shovels, and has for its object to so construct an article of this character that it can be readily applied to a conventional form of shovel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a protector of this character which is extremely simple in construction, and when in place on the shovel the user can use the shovel for spading without wearing the shoe.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in whic Figure 1 is a front view of the shovel, showing the same equipped with the protector. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the protector is formed.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates a shovel of conventional form, and 2 the handle therefor.
In Fig. 3 there is shown the blank of sheet metal from which the protector is formed, said blank being bent longitudr nally along the line a and b so as to provide a tread surface 3, the flanges 4 formed by bending upon the lines a and Z) being inclined downwardly and inwardly so as to provide a substantially dove-tailed guide 5, which is adapted to slide over the upper edge of the shovel blade 1.
The blank is provided with ears 6 which are formed integral with the flanges 4, and are bent upon the lines o and cl and are di- Oopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. G.
rected toward each other but have their inner faces spaced so as to receive the shovel blade 1, and at which time the ears have their inner faces engaged with the blade 1.
The tread surface 3 has one end terminating in an extension? which is bent at right angles to the surface and has its upper end provided with an opening 8 and in which is engaged a nail or screw adapted to engage in the handle 2 and hold the extension firmly in place. The outer end of the tread surface 8 is provided with an extension 9, which is bent at right angles to the tread surface and extends downwardly, said extension having its lower end terminating in a lip 10, which is adapted to engage in a notch 11 formed in one of the said edges of the blade 1. The notch can be readily formed upon simply filing the shovel blade at a desired point.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a protector has been provided which can be easily and quickly attached to the shovel blade and when in place thereon the same will be prevented from accidental disengagement, due to the fact that the lip 10 is engaged in the notch 11, and the extension 7 is fastened to the handle.
What is claimed is A shoe protector for shovels providing a tread surface, said surface having its longitudinal edges terminating in downwardly and inwardly inclined flanges, said flanges having ears carried thereby and adapted to have their inner faces engage the shovel blade, an extension formed upon one end of the tread surface and adapted to rest against the handle, and be engaged thereto, a second extension formed upon the opposite end of the tread surface and having a lip carried thereby, said shovel blade having a notch formed therein for engagement by said lip, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. KEEN TEL.
