PROTECTING-PLATE FOR WOODEN BUCKETS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 1, 1913. Serial No. 803,983.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE L. PUMPHREY, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVashington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Plates for Wooden Buckets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in protecting plates for wooden pails or buckets, and has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the same can be easily and quickly applied to a bucket or pail.
A. further object of the invention is to so construct plates of this type that when in place upon a bucket or pail the edges will be protected against wear incident to the rubbing of the bail against the sides of the pail or bucket.
A still further object of the invention is to so construct plates of this type that the bail can be pivotally connected thereto.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bucket equipped with the plates. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a plan view of the plate blank.
The plates 1, are formed from suitable sheet metal and are designed to be attached to the bucket 2 upon its upper edge, and at diametrically opposite points.
The plates 1 are so cut as to provide upper straight edges 3, vertical end edges 4, and a curved lower edge 5, said plates being provided adjacent their curved edges with inwardly struck spurs 6, which are adapted Copies of to penetrate the bucket 2, and if desired additional securing devices may be passed through the perforations 7, which are also formed adjacent the curved edges 5.
Adjacent the lowest point of curvature of each plate 1 are vertical slits 8 so that the material between said slits may be pressed outwardly to provide loops 9 which are designed to be pivotally engaged by the eyes 10 formed upon the ends of the Wire bail 11, which is of the conventional form.
When the plates 1 are in place upon the sides of the bucket the material thereof is bent upon the lines AB, the fold thus formed being crimped, as indicated by the numeral 12, of Fig. 1. Thus it will be seen that by bending the plates in this manner that the fold and spurs 6 will effectually hold said plates in place.
From the foregoing description it will be noted that the plates will prevent the bail 11 from rubbing against the bucket, thus preventing wear. Further it will be noted that plates formed in this manner may be quickly applied to buckets, which were previously equipped with the usual bail ears.
lVhat is claimed is A protective plate for buckets consisting of a single piece of sheet metal having the upper edge thereof bent and adapted to engage the upper edge of the bucket, a loop struck from said piece of metal to form an ear for the attachment of a bail, spurs struck from the metal on lines diverging from the said ear, the faces of the said spurs on each side of the ear being in opposite relationship to the bent edge of the plate whereby when the plate is secured to a bucket the movement of the plate with relation to the bucket will be prevented.
