SHIELD FOR SHOES.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 756,560, dated April 5, 1904;

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CORNELIUS N. AUSTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at (ladyville, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shields for Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in shields for shoes; and its obj set is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be readily attached to the sole of a shoe and which is particularly adapted for protecting the same when it is desired to press downward upon a shovel or similar tool.

A further object is to provide a shield of this character which will not slip upon the edge of the shovel and which will be securely retained against accidental displacement from the shoe.

I/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in providing a shield having transversely extending corrugations upon its lower or working face, and to each side of the shield is hinged a side plate having an adjustable sole-engaging ear. A strap connects the side plates and serves to hold them clamped against the sides of the sole of the shoe.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

1n the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the shield, a shoe being shown in dotted lines in position thereon. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the shield. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a shield formed of metal or any other suitable material and preferably so shaped as to conform to the bottom of a sole of a shoe. This plate has transversely-extending corrugations 2 upon its lower or w orking face, and adj ustably connected to the plate at each side thereof is one leaf, 3, of a hinge. The other leaf, 4, of this hinge forms a side plate, and to this side plate is adjustably mounted an L-shaped clamping-plate 5, the inwardly-extending lug 6 whereof is adapted to project over the side of the sole of the shoe and clamp thereon. Eyes 7 are formed upon the outer faces of the side plates 4; and are engaged by the ends of straps 8, and the inner ends of these straps are adapted to be fastened together by a buckle 9 of any suitable construction. Spurs 10 are arranged upon the plate 1 and are adapted to engage the bottom of the sole of the shoe to prevent the shield from slipping after it has been placed in position.

hen it is desired to attach the shield to a shoe, the straps 8 are detached from each other and the side plates i are swung outward. The shoe is then placed upon the plate 1 and in engagement with the spurs 10, and the side plates are swung inward, so as to bring the lug 6 into position over the sides of the sole of the shoe. These plates are held in these positions by fastening the inner ends of the straps 8 together. The plate 1 can then be placed upon the edge of a shovel or other tool, and said tool will be engaged by any one of the corrugations 2, which will serve to prevent the shield from slipping.

It will be seen that a workman by using a shield such as herein described can prevent the wear and tear upon the shoes which ordinarily results from the continual use of shovels, &c.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shield; of side plates hinged thereto, sole-engaging devices upon the side plates, and means for securing the plates to a shoe.

2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shield having sole-engaging spurs thereon; of side plates hinged to the sides of the shield, sole-engaging devices extending therefrom, and means for securing the side plates to a shoe.

8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a shield having sole-engaging spurs thereon; of hinged side plates adjustably connected to the sides of the shield, sole-engaging devices upon the side plates, and means for securing the side plates to a shoe.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a shield having a corrugated working face; of spurs upon the shield, hinged side plates adjustably connected to the sides of the shield, and means for securing the side plates to a shoe.
