Description

T. WELLINGTON. PADLOCK PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 24. ms.-
Eatented Nov. 27, 1917.
Quinn/i201;-
WTED @TATES FATQEN THOMAS HENRY ELLINGTON, 0F RICE, VIRGINIA.
PADLOCK-PROTECTOB.
Application filed June 24, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HENRY EL- LINGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rice, in the county of Prince Edward and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Padlock- Protectors, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to padlock protectors, the object in view being to provide a simple, inexpensive and practical device for covering a padlock exposed to the elements, the device embodying means whereby it retains itself in proper relation to the padlock by engaging the hasp in connection with which the padlock is used, the device being readily removable from the hasp when it is desired to obtain access to the padlock.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the device of this invention in its applied relation to a padlock and hasp, the device being shown in elevation and the padlock being indicated by dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the padlock protector detached.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section on the line 33 of Fig; 1.
The padlock protector or cover contemplated in this invention, in the preferred embodiment thereof, is formed from a single sheet metal blank, the same being cut and bent to form a front wall 1, side walls 2, an inclined water shedding top wall 3, and a plurality of spring fingers or detents 4 which are arranged in spaced relation to each other to allow the device to fit over Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov, 2'3, 1191?,
Serial No. 105,624.
the staple or eye member 5 of a padlock indicated at 6, and at the same time embrace the hasp 7. Projecting upwardly from the top wall 3 is an extension 8 of said top wall, said extension being recurved and extended downwardly to form the spring retaining fingers 4. A portion of the metal is cut away to form the fingers i and also to provide a relatively short recurved portion 9 having an opening 10 therein to receive an anchoring cord, chain or other flexible connection 11 which may be terminally secured to the door in order to prevent loss of the protector or cover when it is not in use.
After the hasp has been placed over the eye or staple and a padlock has been passed through the eye and locked, the protector or cover is moved downwardly over the padlock at the same time causing the retaining fingers i to embrace the upper edge of the hasp. When in this position, the protector sheds all water, snow or the like and keeps the padlock in a dry condition so that the working parts of the lock will be protected against the elements and be maintained in good working condition. The device may be manufactured and placed on the market at a small cost.
I claim A padlock protector comprising a cover having imperforate front, side and top walls, the latter being transversely inclined to form a water shed, and door hasp engaging retaining fingers having free end portions extending downwardly from the top wall of the protector and arranged in spaced relation to each other so as to straddle the hasp and frictionally retain the protector in fixed relation thereto.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
THOMAS HENRY ELLINGTON.
