Description
W. I WINNE. BOX-FASTENERS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM I. WINNE, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,874, dated October 2, 1877; application filed April 28, 1877.
To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WiLLIAM I. WINNE, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Fastening the Covers of Boxes, Grates, &c., of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a box with my fastening attached thereto, and Fig. 2 a modification-0f my device.
. The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and reliable fastening that will secure the cover so that it cannot be accidentally removed from the box while in transit,
but which can be readily fastened and unfastened when required.
As shown in the drawing, the fastening is made of a metallic bar, preferably of wire, having sufficient elasticity to form a spring, which is bent at A to form a bight, which is secured, by the staple a, to the cover. The
two parts are bent at b, so that the limbs B and B will extend downward at the sides of the box. One of the limbs is bent at c, as shown in Fig. 1, to form the hook O, which passes through the staple D, fixed in the side of the box. The other limb, B, extends downward in a direct line, and, by bearing against the side of the staple D, acts as a guard to prevent the hook C from dropping out of the staple.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2, the limb B, instead of being carried down in a straight line, as shown in Fig. 1, is bent to form another hook, C. When made in this form, both hooks are passed, in reversed directions, through the staple D, so that each limb serves as a guard or check to prevent the hook of the other limb from slipping from the staple.
To release the fastening, one of the hooks must be released from the staple D, and to accomplish this sufficient force must be applied to it to overcome the resistance of the spring of the other limb. When one side is released the fastening will swing freely from the staple D, so as to liberate the cover.
I claim as my invention- The fastening device herein described, consisting of a metallic bar bent to form the limbs B B, extending to the staple D, one or both of which are provided with a hook, O, in combination with the staple I), as and for the purpose herein specified.
WILLIAM I. WINNE.
