UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
XVILLIAM H. TYLER, OF DAVID CITY, NEBRASKA.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,629, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed February 8. 1888. Serial No. 263.343. (X0 model.)
To 60% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. TYLER, of David City, in the county of Butler and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Snap-Hook, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to snaphooks, and has for its object to provide asnap-hook formed of a single piece of wire, which may be readily attached to or detached from a ring or other connection.
The invention consists in a snap-hook constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 illustrates the invention with a ring engaging the same. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, and Fig. 3 represents a snap-hook with parts bent back into position to release or engage a ring.
In the construction of this invention I form a snap-hook of a single piece of wire bent to form the portion 1, to which a strap or other connection may be attached, then extending diagonally, as at 2 2, the parts 2 2 overlapping each other and extending downward diagonally and away from each other, thereby forming spring-arms 3, having the books 4 5,1"ormed at their lower ends, overlapping each other, as shown, with the open portions of the hooks extending in the same direction. The hook 4 begins from the curved portion 6 of the extension 3 and extends across between the extensions 3 3, and is then carried down and around parallel with the bend of the hook 5, the point of the latter extending up to the bend 6 of the hook 4.
It will be seen by the foregoing description that the hook 5 closes the opening 7 of the hook 4, and that in order to release a ring, as 9, the extension 3 of the hook 4 must be bent back,
so as to allow the ring to slip over the point of the hook 5 and pass the extension 3 of the hook 4.
By means of this construction a ring, 9, or other device with which it is desired to engage the snap-hook, may be readily attached to or released therefrom, and the hooks 4 5, overlapping each other, will form a strong hold for the ring or other device engaging them, and it cannot be pulled out of position. By reason of the parts 2 2 diverging from each other and the movement of the arms 3 3 being such as to cause the diverging parts 2 2 to open and close at right angles to the part 1, instead of in the same vertical plane therewith, there will be very little strain brought on the spring snap-hook, and it will form a strong and serviceable spring snap-hook.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A snaphook formed of a single piece of wire, having diagonal sp ring-arms with hooked ends opening and overlapping in the same direction and closing their openings, substantiall y as shown and described.
2. A snap-hook formed of a single piece of wire, having a folded portion for the attachment of a strap and diverging spring-arms with overlapping hooks opening on the same and extending in the same lateral direction from their arms toward their points, and one of said hooks extending over and closing the opening of the other hook, substantially as shown and described.
3. A snap-hook formed of a single piece of wire, having the part 1, diagonal portions 2, the diverging spring-arms 3, and the hooks 4 5, substantially as described, the hook 5 diverging over the opening of book 4, substantially as described.
WILLIAM H. TYLER.
