BACK-BAND BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,744, dated March 21, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALTER F. ANTHONY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Back-Band Buckles; andldo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in back band buckles of the class having a supporting hook for suspending a trace of a harness; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts of which it is composed, whereby the buckle firmly grasps a back band, supports a trace and is prevented from slipping or accidental displacement, all as will be hereinafter fully ex plained and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The annexed drawings to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1, represents a rear view of the hinged plate detached from the buckle. Fig. 2, is a face view of the buckle frame, detached from the hinged plate. Fig. 3, is a plan view of the buckle, showing the same closed. Fig. 4 is also a plan view of the buckle showing the hinged plate thrown up or open and Fig. 5, is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the device applied to a back band.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings A, designates the back band buckle, consisting of two parts a and b. The portion a consists of a skeleton frame, comprising the outer longitudinal bars 0 and d; an inner bar 6 and all connected by two end bars f, f, and a depending piece 9 forming a hook h, the whole being integral, and between these outer end bars and intermediate bar are longitudinal slots 2', 2', designed for the passage of a back band. This central bar is provided with out wardly extended flangesj, which are bent at right angles to said bar and forms a part thereof. The portion 1), consists of a loop or handle it, and a cross bar Z; eyes or hinges an adapted to be connected to the upper longitudinal bar of the buckle frame, thus hinging the two portions to one another as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. This portion 1) is also provided with a cross bar at arranged between the loop and bar Z and the same is provided with teeth 0 that are bent at right angles to said bar we and are designed to grasp or bite the back band when the buckle is fastened thereto. The loop serves the double purpose of a handle for the hinged portion and for locking the two parts together; the same, when in a closed position permits the hook to enter the loop and the trace upon said hook prevents the loop from outward movement or accidental displacement.

It will be seen by reference to the annexed drawings and the above description that my back band buckle comprises two parts only; the one being hinged to the other and can be readily cast or stamped out of sheet metal and that the central longitudinal bar of the buckle frame with its side flanges is wider than the toothed bar on the hinged portion; the teeth, when the hinged portion is closed, resting between the flanges of the bar 6, and firmly holding the back band in place; the teeth being placed upon the barn so that when the buckle is open for adjustment the back band or web can be drawn in either direction, up or down through the slots in the buckle frame without being caught or engaged by the teeth aforesaid, thus permitting a free movement of the band in adjusting the buckle thereto, and the teeth is protected and prevented from being drawn either up or down by the flanges on the central cross bar of the frame a, and by such construction the web or back band has an indirect passage or lies in a zigzag position between the two bars n and e and cannot be removed from the buckle until the hinged portion is raised and it is simple in construction easily and quickly adjusted, and it is durable as well as ornamental and at the same time cheap to manufacture.
