The flexible loop 0 is formed of a single piece of leather or other flexible material, the opposite ends of which are cut off square and inserted in the rectangular socket formed by the ears and shoulder so as to fit tightly, and the same are rigidly confined in said socket by the rivet f, extending through the same. Itshould be observed that the lugs and square shoulder upon which the squared ends of the leather bear form a rigid connection with the metallic bar and prevent movement or friction at the joint.

My invention is different from and possesses many advantages over the old devices before mentioned, the spreader mentioned merely consisting of a body having a loop inclosing a bar which is loosely surrounded by the flexible loop. It is evident that I do not claim such aconstruction, as the object of my device is to rigidly secure the flexible loop to the center of the rear edge of the rigid bar to prevent movement at the joint, all the.

movement that is required being allowed in my device by the flexibleness of the leather and the looseness with which it fits the checkhook.

The overdraw checkrein-holder mentioned shows a split quadrangular frame having the cheeks provided with projections and extending from the free ends; hence it would be impossible to use this old manner of fastening in a spreader, as the bar of my device must be continuous and solid. Thereby the strength and durability of the article are greatly increased and its appearance improved, and, further, in my construction it is not necessary to employ the projections and notched ends by reason of the square shoulder 6; hence it will be obvious that my improved article is different from any of these old devices, and that I in no way make any claim to them; but

What I do claim is-= A checkrein spreader consisting, essentially, of a single continuous integral bar provided with rigid loops on its ends, and in the same plane a pair of parallel ears formed integral with said bar and extending rearwardly from the central portion of the rear edge of the bar, the inner faces of said ears being smooth and located a distance apart, and the edge of the bar between the same forming a square shoulder, the flexible loop composed of a single piece of flexible material having its ends squared and located between said ears and bearing against said shoulder, and a pin passing through the ears and said ends, substantially as set forth.
