Description
J. STAPLETON. Snap-Hook.
No. 222,324. Patented Dec. 2,1879.
WITNESSES IN NT WK, @WM WM M W3 BY cuttingaway a portion of the metal.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
*JAMES, STAPLETON, OF TODD P. 0., PENNSYLVANIA. I
- IMPROVEMENT IN SNAP-HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,324, dated December 2, 1879; application filed August 15, 1878. A I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,-JAMES STAPLETON, of
Todd P. 0., in the county of Huntingdon, and v in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap- Hooks; and I do'hereby declare that the following. is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
. My invention relatestosnap-hooks; and
consists in the combination of two half-round I In order to enable others skilled in the art towhich my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will, now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in whicha Figure 1 is an edge, and Fig. 2 a side, view; while Figs. 3 and 4 are views of the two-ends of the snap. I
AHA represent twometal bars, which are formed alike, each having a hook, B, atone end, and a loop or eye, 0, at the other. These bars are made flat on; their inner faces, and. the two are pivoted together near their'loop ends. 1 Each hook has a shoulder at as 00, formed by When the hooks are closed together the end of one lies in the recess in the other, so that the two ends are flush withlthe body. f
D represents the leather strap, which is made double at its lowerextremity, and each end E thereof is connected separately to one of the loops 0.
.low a very heavy ring to f represents a sliding keeper, which is .brought down close over the two ends of the strap when it is desired to prevent the parts of the snap-hook from being separated. By moving this keeper upward the parts of the hook can be separated very wide, so as to albe passed between the parts, which would not be the case if a single strap passed through both loops.
It will be noticed that the peculiar feature of the invention is the particular form of the hook, having the pivot in the sameplane therewith. and having strapl'oops in a plane at right angles with said pivot and hooks, so constructed as to receive a strapupon each loop without interfering with the lateralmo ve- -ment to open the hooks.
This construction and relative arrangement admit of the application of two straps or two parts of a bifurcated strap arranged side by side, and so that a keeper holding the straps together also looks the hooks so that they cannot be separated.
' Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hooks B B, pivoted together, with the pivot in the same plane as the hooks, and
provided with strap-loops O U, in a plane at.
right angles with said pivot and hooks, in combination with the separate straps E E and sliding keeper f, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. s
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of July, 1878. r f
JAMES STAPLETON.
Witnesses: I
DAVID HORTON, a Tnos. MANSBARGER. v
