Description

(No Model.)
G. M. JEWETT.
SNAP LOOK. No. 316,269. I Patented Apr. 21, 1885.
showing my improved construction in the form NIT-ED Srarns GEORGE M. JEl/VETT, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORTO THE SMITH & EGGE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SNAP-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 316,269, dated April 21, 1885. Application filed February 24, 1 885. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, GEORGE M. J EWETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in-the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SnapLocks; andIdo hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to snap-locks, and has for its obj ect to furnish a device of this description simple in construction and suitable for such uses as dog-collars, dog-leads, jewelry, and the like, where ease of manipulation and action are requisite; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter fully explained, and then specific ally designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may fully understand its construction and operation, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l'is a side elevation of my snap-look when closed, the curve of the shackle being indicated by the dotted lines; Fig. 2, a similar view, but showing the lock open; Fig. 3, a perspective of the case, and Fig. 4 a view of a padlock.
Similar letters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
A is the body of the snap, provided with the hook B at its upper end, and with the semicircular recess C out in the edge thereof. I do not desire to particularly specify this recess, as the object attained thereby may with equal facility be accomplished by an indentation'in one or both sides of the metal forming the body. I preferably strike up the latter from sheet metal.
D is the case. This I preferably form by first blanking it from thin sheet metal-and then folding into the form shown at Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In each side of the case, opposite to one an- At their lower portion both the body and I the sides of the case are pierced, and a rivet, F, passed through and headed upon both sides, assembles the parts hereinbefore described. The body may then be swung into or out of the case upon the rivet, its fulcrum-point,and when within the case it is retained in that position by the teats springing into the recess C by reason of the resiliency of the metal of said case.
When desired, a loop of metal or swivel maybe attached to the heel of the lock in any ordinary manner. Such a device may be seen at Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, designated as G.
The forms of my invention shown in the first two figures of the drawings are designed to be used as ordinary snap-hooks, or for securing chains upon bags or satchels or upon dog-collars. Modifications of the device may, however, with great facility be used upon j ewelry, as the fastenings of bracelets and watch-chains, and a form suitable for these purposes I have shown in the modification illustrated at Fig. 4, and made in the form of an ordinary padlock.
In my invention I do not wish to be confined to the exact shape or form, either ofthe body or case, shown in the drawings; nor do I desire to be limited by the means of fastening herein set forth, as I have simply shown this means as one which is exceedingly simple and which answers all purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. The combination, in a snap-lock, of the body having a hook at one extremity thereof, with the case pivoted to the other end and adapted to close over the nose of the hook, and means, as described, for holding the body within the case, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination ,with the body provided with a hook and having a recess, as shown,of a case pivoted to said body and adapted to embrace the same, and furnished with a teat 'In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in 10 or teats projecting inwardly, and adapted by presence of two witnesses. the resiliency of the metal forming the case to hold within the recess in the body,as described. GEORGE M. J E\VET'I 3. lhe combination of body A, having hook B and recess 0, case D, having teats E with WVitnesses: 100p G and rivet F, holding all parts of the S. S. WVILLIAMsoN, device in position, substantially as and for the Y W. T. HAVILAND. purpose set forth. 1
