IMPROVEMENT IN TAG-FASTENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,293, dated November 20, 1877; application filed June 4, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER R. RUssELL, of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tag-Fasteners and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ofthis specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has relation to tagfasteners, and is designed as an improvement upon my patent granted January 11, 1876, No. 172,054. i

The invention consists in the two ends of the fastener being brought around and upon each other, so at that point, or upper portion of the curve of the loop, a double thickness of wire is obtained, thereby making a much stronger look, while the pointed end, which is to pierce the material, takes a downward di-. rection from the end of the loop instead of an upward direction, as is the case in my former patent. i

All danger of injury to the hands is removed in handling the goods to which the fastener is attached, while atthe same time the point is much more readily attached.

In' the accompanying drawings, A represents my improved fastener, connected in any suitable manner to a paper or othertag, B. The fastener A is composed of any suitable material, the two ends a I) being bent around and upon each other at the upper portion of the curve of the loop, each end forming part of the arc of the upper curve, so as to make a lock of double strength, that will not be liable to break or weaken by any strain.

The point 0 takes a downward direction fi'om the top of the loop d, and projects out sufficiently to enable the fastening to be readily attached to the material. The point e, by taking a downward course, as previously stated, prevents the danger of the point entering the hand, scratching, or otherwise injuring it, while at the same time it is more readily attached to the goods.

As the operation of securing the fastening and its many advantages have been fully explained in my former patent, any further description is considered unnecessary.

I am aware that a snap-hook formed of a single piece of spring metal, having an open eye extended at its throat to form independent and uncrossed shanks, gradually diverging in their planes to form a mouth, and curved in opposite directions to form hooks, has heretofore been employed, and I therefore lay no claim to such invention.

Having now fully described my invention, what 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The tag-fastener herein described, formed of the continuous piece of wire A, having aloop at its inner end, and at its outer end the loops a b, in contact with each other, and having pointed ends projecting downward, the pointed end 0 projecting also outward, substantially as shown and described.
