Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 11, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. Sci-rULrz, citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cross-Rein Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cross rein buckles for coupling the cross reins to the main rein-s in double harness, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily applied to the reins without structural changes therein and without decreasing the strength of either the cross rein or the main rein.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a device of this character which may be readily applied and adjusted upon the main rein.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which causes the device to be pinched or cramped upon the main rein when strain is applied.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described. and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side view of the improved device, applied; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, with portions of a main rein and of a cross rein attached; Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the body portion of the improved device; Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the combined slide and coupling member.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters. v
The improved devicecomprises two main alined complemental body members 10-11 engaging each other by their inner edges having eyes 12-13 at one end through which a loop 14 is mounted to swing, the loop being designed to receive one end of the cross rein, a portion of which is represented at 15. At their opposite ends the members 10-11 are provided with inwardly directed half keepers 16-17. Slidable upon the members 10-11 is a slide member 23 having inwardly directed guide flanges 18- 19 for engaging over the outer edges of the members 10-11, and with an inwardly directed pin 20 at one end. It will be noted that the members lO-ll increase in width from the eyes 12-13 toward the half keepers 16-17, and the sides of the member 23 diverge toward the pin 20 and correspond to the outer inclined edges of the members 10-11. The space between the inner edges of the flanges 18-19 is slightly less than the distance between the members 10-11 adjacent to the eyes 12-13, so that the member 23 can be placed over the members 10-11 and then when moved toward the half keeper 16 the ribs 18-19 will engage beneath the outer edges of the body members 10-11 and thus compress the latter against each other at their outer ends, as will be obvious.
The main rein, represented at 21, is inserted beneath the half keepers 16-17 and the pin 20 of the member 23 inserted in one of the numerous apertures 22, and then when strain is applied between the reins 15-21 the slide member 23 will be drawn toward the keepers 16-17 and cause the flanges 18-19 to compress the members 10-11 toward each other and thus lock the members 10-11 firmly in closed posit-ion, and hold the member 23 from forward movement, and also hold the main rein 21 in position upon the pin 20. The two part member 10-11 with its half keepers 16-17 and its inner edges engaging and with its outer edges diverging toward the half keepers cooperating with the slide 23, its pin 20 and flanges 18-19 thus co-act to produce the desired results. The slide 23 performs the twofold function of a means for maintaining the parts 10-11 in position and also as a support for the main rein, while the half keepers 16-17 co-acting with the pin of the slide hold the rein 21 in position as the pin 20 is located substantially between the inner ends of the half keepers as shown in Fig. 1. Thus the rein 21 cannot be displaced so long as the slide 23 is in position upon the members 10-11, while the members 10-11 and their keepers 16-17 cannot be displaced so long as the slide is in position thereon with its flanges engaged with the inclined edges of the main members.
The improved device is simple in con struction, can be inexpensively manufactured, preferably from sheet or plate steel, or like metal and pressed into the required shape by suitable dies. The improved device may be constructed of any required size and of any suitable material, japanned, plated, galvanized, or otherwise treated so that the attachment conforms in appearance to other metal portions of the harness.
and with the outer edges diverging toward the same, means for connecting a cross rein to said members, and a slide operating upon said members and provided with guide flanges engaging over the diverging edges thereof and provided with an outwardly directed pin, said half keepers adapted to bear over a main rein and said pin adapted to engage in an aperture in the main rein.
