UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI E.
WINFIELD S. THURLOW, on BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
LEVER-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,053, dated May 19, 1885.
Application filed March 9, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,
Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. THURLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Buckle, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of buckles that are made without a tongue, and the object of my invention is to provide a buckle that can. be readily fastened and unfastened and that will be sure to hold. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the position of the buckle before the strap is fastened; Fig. 2, a view of the Same after the strap is fastened, and Fig. 3 a view in perspective before the strap is fastened.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out the several views. 1
The buckle is composed of three pieces, the base A, the lever B, and frame 0. The base A is made smooth and rounding on its outside so that when used on a harness it will not injure the animal. It is provided with ears, to which is pivoted the lever B. The let er B at the part Where it is pivoted to the ears of the base A is enlarged into the shapeof a cam,
which fits into a depression in the base A. The cam is provided with a tooth, E, so that it may hold the strap D more firmly; but it may be used without the tooth E with good results. The frame 0 is attached to the lever B by the pin 12, so, that if there is any Strain on the buckle the lever B- will be pulled down into the position showniuFig. 2, and the strap D held firmly.
In using the buckle, the lever B is raised, the strap D passed underneath the lever between it and the base A. The lever B is then brought down into the position shown in Fig. 2, which causes the cam on the lever to fit into the depression in the baseA and thus secure the strap D. The frame 0 being attached to the lever B causes it to stay in proper position and securely hold the strap D as long as there is any strain on the buckle.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
A buckle having the base A, cam-lever B, and frame 0, the cam-lever pivotally attached to the base and the frame pivotally attached to the lever, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
WINFIELD S. THURLOW.
