HAM EQFASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 416,852, dated December 10, 1889.A J i Application ined January 14, 1889. serrure. 296,356.` (Nbmodei.)
' To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs L. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain.
Anew `and useful Improvement in VHame- Buckles, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention relates to ilnprovements in metallic buckles or clasps in conjunction with and leverage device.
Figure 1 is a top View of the buckle when clasped. Fig. 2 is a side view of the buckle when closed and in the act of opening. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the buckle, taken on the line m oc. Fig. 4 is 'a horizontal section of the buckle applied as a trunk-fastening or otherwise.
Similar numbers refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
In Fig. 1, the part 1 represents the buckle The part 2'is the metallic strap. The. said buckle and strap are each secured to the opposite ends of the hames by loops 33, riveted thereto by boltstt. The metallic strap 2 is provided with slots 5 at regular intervals.
The 'buckle part 1 consists of a metallic strap with two flanges 6 6, these flanges being provided with concave grooves 7 7. The lever 8 is hinged to the `iianges 6 6 at points 9 9 and is provided with convex edges at the points 7 7 made to lit into the concave grooves 7 7, when it is forced down between the ilanges 6 6 and is clasped thereby. The said lever is also provided with the tongue 10, hinged in the slot 11, into which it fits when the buckle is clasped. The said tongue is provided with `flanges 13, which prevent it dropping too deeply into the-slots 5, and is also provided with teats 14 and 15. The said lever 8 is also provided with teat 16 on the under side thereof.'The teats 14, 15, and 16 are arranged, ,when the buckle is closed, to lock through the slots 5 in the strap 2 and into the sockets say, the slot or sockets 17, 18, and 19.` The lever 8, near its extremity, is punctured with two holes 20 20, from which two parallel slot-s 21 21 are cut to the extremity of the level,
thus leaving free fingers on the sides of the lever. provided with right-angled extensions 72 72,
provided therefor in thelpart-l-that is to e The extremities of these fingers are which stand upon the surface of the lever 8 and serve as thumb-buttons, which may be grasped between the thumb and forenger of the hand and the extremities of the iingers pressed toward one another. The exterior edges 7 71of theiingers are made convex or beveled to a line in the center, and
the interior of the sides of the buckle are cut with grooves. The exterior edges 7 7 of the fingers on theV sides of the lever 8 are of such'a size that when the lever 8 falls bei the buckle, or, as shown in Fig. 1, eyes may y be riveted into the buckle, and into these eyes a swinging loop may be secured. y
The operation of my invention I `prefer to illustrate as applied to the tightening and buckling of haines; but it may be used for any purpose to which it is applicable. The parts 1 and 2 are fastened to the lower,` ends of the hames by the link 3 3, rivetedto each at 4 4. then brought together andthe strap introduced at 23, and the strap caused to pass through the buckle as far as the pressure of the hand will unite the divided hames. At this point the lever 8 is thrown back and the tongue 10 permitted to reach its full length and the hook at the end thereof to drop into one ofA the holes in the strap. Pressure is then applied to the knob 22 and the parts 1 and 2 caused thereby to be drawn together to a certain point, where the lever 8 is pressed into its seat between the iianges 6 6. The
teats 14, 15, and 16 dropping into their re-v spective slots, thus lending strength and se-` The ends of the strap and buckle are loc.
curity to the buckle. The operation of openend with means for engaging and holding the strap, a strap arranged to pass through the frame, and a holding device in the rear of the tongue adapted to engage and hold the strap, substantially as described.
2. In a fastening device, the combination of a frame, a lever pivoted tothe frame at one of its extremities, a tongue pivotally attached yto the lever, a strap arranged to pass through the frame and in position to be engaged by the tongue, and acatch located upon the frame and lever in position to engage and hold the lever and frame together when the device is closed, substantially as described.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 17th day of December, A. D. 1888.
