Be it known that I, JACOB W. W. PownLL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to buckles especially adapted for use on harness and the object thereof is to provide a device of the character named which will be neat in appearance, simple in construction and having the body portion thereof formed of a single piece of material.

This buckle is designed to be employed in various places on harness, but it is primarily employed on the outer free end of a short strap pivotally attached to a ring on the hames, this strap and the buckle constituting a rein guide, the rein being passed through the loop in the buckle and is espe-` cially adapted for use on a double harness, but it .may be used to advantage in other places 5 in other words, the loop of the buckle constitutes a rein guide and support, and being mounted on a short swinging strap at.- tached to the haines, permits freedom of movement of the reins, serving to take the place of the guide rings commonly placed on the saddle on either side of the terret, where more freedom of movement is needed in the supporting means for the reins.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts constituting the invention to be hereinafter referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification in which is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawings, in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved buckle attached to a suitable strap; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view of the same; and, Fig. 3 a perspective of the buckle without the strap looking at the rear side thereof.

In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 denotes the central or buckle portion of the device and it consists of a frame provided with a central opening of such a conformation as will best suit the strap on which it is employed. Across the opening in the buckle portion 1 is a bar 2 on which is pivoted a tongue 3. Extending from the forward end of the buckle and integral therewith is an eye or loop 4 which may be in a plane with the body of the buckle, as shown in the drawings, or at right angles thereto, the position of this ring with reference to the buckle being such as to best adapt it to the uses to which it is to be put. From the rear portion of the buckle body portion 1 aretwo depending L-shaped legs 5 connected at `their outer ends to a cross-bar 6. In constructing this buckle I prefer to make the buckle portion slightly concave as disclosed in the drawings, but this is not absolutely essential to this invention and it may be made flat if desired.

In order to make the construction of the buckle easier and give it additional strength, the invention contemplates the making of the body portion 1, loop 4 and depending portions 5 and 'all integral. In attaching straps to this device, the end thereof, referred to in the drawings by the reference numeral 7, is looped around the bar 6 and from thence passes outward to an attaching device having connection with the hames or other suitable portions of the harness and from thence the end, referred to by the reference numeral 8 is passed through the opening in the body-portion 1 over the bar 2, and the tongue 3 is passed through a suitable opening therein. If the end of the strap 8 is long enough it may be passed under the forward end of the buckle to maintain it in proper position.
