Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SCOTT WELLINGTON, OF EAST SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-FASTENERS.
Specification formingipart of Letters Patent No. 154.737, dated September 1, 1874; application filed July 25, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ScoTT WELLINGTON, of East Saginaw, in the county of Saginaw and Stateof Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved bagfastener opened out. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the taken, taken through the line as m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved bag-fastener, simple in construction, easily fastened and unfastened, and reliable in use, holding the bag securely fastened. The invention consists in the plate, the clutches, and the coiled spring, in combination with the strap, the guide-eyes, and the fastening strap or cord, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a strap, which passes around the mouth of the bag, and has eyes B attached to it, through which passes the cord or strap 0. The ends of the strap Aare riveted to a small plate, D, the middle part of the sides of which are turned up to serve as lugs for the leverclutches E to be pivoted to. The lower or inner parts of the clutches E are made equal in breadth to half the distance between the lugs of the plate D, and their outer or upper parts are made nearly twice as Wide as their inner parts, as shown in Fig. 2. The end edges of the lower parts of the clutches E are serrated, to enable them to hold the cord or strap 0 firmly by pressing it against the plate D. The outer ends of the clutches E are held apart, forcing their inner ends down upon the cord 0, by a coiled spring, F, interposed between said outer ends, and kept in place by a wire,
G, passing through said outer ends, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
By this construction, by pulling upon the ends of the cord 0 the fastener will be drawn tightly around the mouth of the bag, the clutches E allowing the said cord to move freely in this direction, but holding it firmly against movement in the other direction.
To unfasten the fastener, the outer ends of the clutches E are pressed together, compressin g the coiled spring F, which raises the inner ends of said clutches, and releases the cord 0, allowing it to be drawn out freely.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plate D, clutches E, and coiled spring F, in combination with the strap A, eyes B, and cord or strap 0, substantially as herein shown and described.
SCOTT WELLINGTON.
