Be it known that I, GEORGE D. HUTCHISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cool; and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telescope-Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in telescope traveling-bags, the invention residing particularly in the securing means for locking the two parts of the bag to one another at different points, dispensing with the use of the straps which are now employed for this purpose.

The invention consists of an ordinary telescope-bag made up of two parts, one fitting within the other, metallic bands surrounding the bottom part at points near each end thereof, the said bands extending upwardly to the top edges of the sides of said bottom part, U- shaped in cross-section and provided with a series of openings arranged at regular intervals, metallic bands surrounding the top part of said bag and located at points near each end thereof, and hooks pivoted in the ends of said metallic bands, adapted to be turned inwardly into one or theother of the openings in the bands surrounding the bottom part for the purpose of locking the two parts of the bag together. i

The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a telescope traveling-bag with my improved locking device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the bottom part of the bag. Fi g. 3 is a similar view of the top part thereof. Fig. 4 is .a detail perspective view of one of the bands surrounding the top part of the bag with the hooks in each end thereof. Fig. 5 is a similar view of one of the bands surrounding the bottom part. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through the same, and Fig. 7 is a cross-section.

Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the difierent views.

My improved bag is made up of the bottom part 1 and the top part 2, the former fitting within the latter in the usual manner. Surrounding the bottom part 1, at points near each end thereof, are metallic U shaped bands 3 3, the same being extended upwardly along the sides of said bottom part to the top edges thereof. Fitting upon the sides of the bands 3 are strips of metal l 4:,Wl1lCh are U- shaped in cross-section, with flanges at the side edges thereof, through which rivets may be passed for securing said strips to said bands. The said strips arealso provided with a series of openings or transversely-extendingslots 5 5, arranged at regular inter vals therein. The top part 2 is cutaway along the lower edges of its side pieces, as shown at 6 6, and has surrounding it two metallic bands 7 7, located at points near the outer ends of said top pieces and terminating at points adjacent to the cut-away portions 6. The said bands are riveted or otherwise socured in place and have slots 8 8, formed in their outer ends, with the arms 9 9, formed thereby, bent back upon themselves, forming bearings for pins or shafts 1O 10, upon which are pivotally mounted wire hooks ll 1l,having rearwardly-extending arms 12 12 thereon. The said hooks 11 11 are each made of a sin gle piece of wire and are so constructed that when they are turned inwardly the arms 12 1 2 thereon will bear against the outer surface of the strips 4. The said arms 12 also serve the functionof handles, whereby said hooks may be turned inwardly or drawn outwardly.

hen the bag is packed, the upper part 2 is placed down upon the bottom part 1 and the contents compressed to the proper degree, and then the hooks 11 11 are turned inwardly, fit-ting into the nearest slots or openings 5 in the bands 8, lying opposite them. The two parts of the bag are thus held in locked position without the use of straps, and cannot become. unlocked by jolting or shaking. When it is desired to open the bag, the hooks 11 are separately grasped by the spring-arms 12 thereon and drawn outwardly from engagement with the strips l. The top part 2 is then free to be removed from the bottom part 1.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination with the two parts of a telescope traveling-bag, the upper or top part thereof being cut away along its lower edges at pointsnear its outer ends, of U-shaped bands of metal surrounding the bottom part of said bag at points near each end thereof, U -shaped strips of metal riveted or otherwise secured to the sides of said bands and provided with slots or openings therein arranged at regular intervals, metallic bands surrounding the top part of said bag and terminating at points near the cut-away portions thereof, hooks pivoted in the outer ends of said bands and adapted to be turned inwardly through the openings in said strips, and handles formed on said hooks, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination with the top and bottom parts of a telescope traveling-bag, of U- shaped bands of metal surrounding the bottom part of said bag at points near each end thereof, U-shaped strips of metal riveted or otherwise secured to the sides of said bands and provided with slots or openings therein arranged at regular intervals, metallic bands surrounding the top part of the bag and providedin their ends with slots forming arms, said arms beingbent back to provide bearings, pins mounted in said bearings, and hooks pivotally secured to said pins and adapted to engage the slots or openings of the strips carried by the bottom part of the bag, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The combination with the top and bottom parts of a telescope traveling-bag, said top part being cut away along its edges at points near its ends, of U shaped bands surrounding the bottom part of said bag at points near each end thereof, U-shaped strips riveted or otherwise secured to the sides of said bands and provided With slots or openings therein arranged at regular intervals, bands surrounding the top part of said bag and provided in their ends with slots forming arms, said arms being bent back to provide bearings, pins mounted in said bearings, and wire hooks pivotally mounted on said pins, each of said hooks being formed of a single piece and provided with arms, said hooks being adapted to engage the slots or openings formed in the strips carried by the bottom part of the bag, substantially as and for the purpose described.
