UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS P. SPENCER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HENRY MEHL, OF
' SAME PLACE.
FASTENING FOR POCKET-BOOK HANDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,959, dated October 4, 1881. I Application filed August 15, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. SPENoER,of
' the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings forPocket-Book Handles, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a pocket-book to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is is a sectional elevation of a part of the same, showing the improvement arranged for use; and Fig. 3 is the same view as Fig. 2, but showing the improvement inclosed in the pocketbook.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to fasten handles to pocket-books in such a manner that theycan be shut up within the pocket-book when not required for use.
The invention consists in the combination, with the pocket-book'frame having slots and bars across the slots, of the hinged straps connected with the handle, whereby the said handle can be swung down into and inclosed within the said pocket-book, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Arepresents a pocket-book, which can be made of any desired style.
B is the frame of the pocket-book A, which has a notch or slot, 0, formed in its outer or free edge, near each end of the said pocketbook A. The slot 0 is formed with a bar, D, extending across it to serve as a. pivot to the fastening, which bar can be a solid part of the frame B, or brazed, soldexed, or otherwise secured to the said frame. E is a metal strap which is bent together at its center to form an eye to receive the bar D. The ends of-the strap E have holes formed through them tore- 4o ceive rings F, or other connections forming a part of or eonnectedwith the handle G. The handle G may be a chain, as shown in the drawings, or it oaube made of'any suitable material. With this construction when the handle is not required for use the straps E can be turned inward, and they and the handle G can be shut up in apocket of the pocket-book A, as indicated in Fig. 3.
In case the pocket-book A is made with a flap folding over its upper edge, the slots 0 should be made in the end parts of the frame B, so that the handle will not bein the way of Y the said flap.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a traveling-bag with a chain having a cross-bar at its end, which, after being passed around any object to which it is desired to secure the bag, is dropped through an opening in the said bag; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- In a fastening for a pocket-book handle, the combination, with the frame B, having slots Q and bars D across the said slots, of the hinged straps E, connected with the handle G, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said handle, when not required for use, can be inclosed in the said poeketbook, as set forth.
THOMAS P. SPENCER. Witnesses:
JAMES 'l. GRAHAM, O. SEDGWIOK.
