FRANZ PANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY,
A. FULLER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, 'ASSIGNOR' TO THE J; E. MERGOTT GOM- A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BAG-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 8,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a
State of New Jersey,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
of the lnvention,
and exact description such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct,
ence being had to ings and to the marked thereon.
and use the same, referthe accompanying drawnumerals of reference The present invention has reference to improvements in metallic frames for pocketbooks, satchels, purses,
and the like; and the invention relates more especially to a novel construction of looking or holding catch connected with the frame sections.
The main purpose of this invention is to provide a pocket-book,
urse or other frame, and its latch or catch which shall be neat in appearance, and shall be of a simple,
strong and durable view to furnishing a having a novel co ated holding catch or construction, with a bag or purse frame nstruction of spring actulatch, which can be easily manipulated and one which is reinforced and not liable rangement of its The inventlon 1 to breakage or disarparts. s clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 repres frame and catch, of my inventlon.
ents, a plan view of a bag embodying the princlples Fig. 2 represents, a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 represents, on an enlarged scale, a fragmentary sectional view taken on line w-w of Fig. 4 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 4 represents,
fragmentary und frame members thereto, and
ployed in all of the above to indicate corresponding In the drawings,
on an enlarged scale, a er plan view of the bag with the catch attached fragmentary sectional a-a of Fig. 4 lookdescribed views. parts. 1 and 2 indicate the usual pair of frame sections which are pivotally secured 1n their lower end portions Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
1920. Serial no. 364,050.
by means ofsuitable pins or rivets 3, or they may be pivotally connected with each other in any other well-known manner. One of said frame sections, as 1, is provided in its upper surface with two suitably arranged slots or openings for the reception of two extensions 4 and 5 formed on the catch member 6, and the other frame section'as 2 is provided with the usual nosings or projections 7-7 forced out from the metal from which said, frame section is made, or any other suitable means may be provided, designed to be brought into holding engagement with the edge of the catch member to firmly secure the bag frame members in locked position.
The extension 4 of the catch member 6 passes through the slot 8 in the frame section 1, and the extension 5 of the catch member 6 passes through a similar slot 9 formed in the frame section 1, said slots beingin alinement with'each other.
A torsion spring 10, one end of which is flattened, is firmly secured in the extension 4 and the other end thereof, which is provided with a bent end 11 is located in the channel of the frame section 1 so as to provide for a twist or torsional action of the spring when the catch is operated and also to prevent rotation thereof.
When the catch has in this manner been arranged in position, the extension 5 which is formed on the lower edge of the catch member and which projects beyond one end of the catch member engages with the frame section 1 as clearly indicated in the draw- In assembling the device, it is to be understood that the extension 5 of the catch member 6, is first passed through the slot 9 in the frame section, and the extension 4 is thereafter passed through the slot 8.
The spring 10 is then secured to the extension 4 of the catch member as previously described.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a bag frame section having two slots 8 and 9, in alinement with each other, to receive the extensions 4 and 5 of the catch member, which are located near the ends of said catch .member, the said extension 5 projecting beintegral end extensions, securely holds the catch to the frame section and prevents the ends from lifting away from the frame section, thereby providing a more rigid construction which also prevents the wearing apparel of the user from being caught under the ends of the catch member as has been common heretofore where the catch was provided with only one extension.
Experience has demonstrated that theorganization above described is a highly efiicient one, and while I have shown the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as obvious modifications thereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein set forth, I consider within the scope and terms of my claims.
Having thus described my invention,
Y what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I V 7 1. In a purse or bag frame, the combination with a pair of hinged frame sections one of which has a pair of slots in alinement therein, of a catch member carried by said last-mentioned section and having inter.- locking engagement with the other section, said catch member having one side thereof provided with two integral extensions, one extension folded back upon itself, the fold projecting through one of said slots, a torsion spring within said jaw, one end extending through said fold, and the other integral extension of said catch member projecting through the other of said slots and lying within and engaging with the first named frame section.
2. In a purse or bag frame, the combination with a pair of hinged frame sections one of which has a pair of slots in alinement therein, of a catch member carried by said last-mentioned section and having interlocking engagement with the other section, said catch member having one vided with two integral extensions, one extension folded back upon itself, the fold projecting through one of said slots, a torsion spring within said jaw, through said fold, and the other integral extension of said catch member having a portion extending beyond said catch member and projecting through the other of said slots, the said extension lying within the;
frame section and portion of the extension which projects beyond the catch member engaging with the upper wall of said frame section.
This specification signed this fifth day of March, 1920.
