0. BLUST.
BAG AND POCKET BOOK FASTENER. No. 320,427. Patented June 16, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES BLUST, OF NEWT YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO B. YVOLFF & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
BAG AND POCKET-BOOK FASTENER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,427, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed April 7, 1885.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BLUsT, of the city and county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Pocket- Book and Bag Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to frames for pocketbooks and hand-bags which consist of two portions hinged or pivoted together, and provided with a suitable fastening device, by which they may be readily connected with and disconnected from each other in opening and closing. the pocketbook or bag.
The invention consists in the combination, with the two portions of a pocket-book or bag frame, of a crank or bail having its two ends pivoted in line with each other to one frame portion and offset between its ends, and one or more pins or studs fixed to the other frame portion between the pivotal points of the crank or bail, and with which the offset portion of the crank or bail maybe engaged to hold the frame portions together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents part of two frame portions and a fastening embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents part of two frame portions with a fast ening of slightly-modified form, also embody ing my invention. Fig. 3 represents a part of two frame portions and a fastening which comprises two pins or studs, with which the crank or bail may engage; and Fig. 4. is a transverse section of the two frame portions and the fastening device.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
In all the figures of the drawings, A A designate the two frame portions, which may be of any suitable construction, and of metal or other material. I have only shown the outer straight portions of the frame, and at their ends these portions are bent transversely and pivoted together, so that they may be swung toward and from each other in a manner well understood by persons familiar with such frames for pocket-books and bags.
The frame portions may consist of hollow metallic shells, as shown in Fig. 4, in order to (N0 model.)
make them light and strong, and at the same time give them the appearance of great solidity.
The fastening devices consist, essentially, of a crank or bail-like portion, B, which is pivoted to the frame portion A, and which is adapted to be swung into engagement with one or more headed pins or studs, 7), upon the frame portion A.
As here represented, the frame portion A is provided with posts or projections a, and the crank B consists of a wire, the ends of which are made slightly smaller in diameter than the main portion, and are pivoted in hearings in the posts or projections c. It will be readily understood that by swinging the crank B upon its pivots the offset portion B of the crank may be engaged with and disengaged from the one or more pins or studs 1).
In Fig. 1 I have represented a crank or bail, B, having a short bend, B, and adapted to engage with the single pin or stud b on the frame portion A.
In Fig. 2 I have represented the crank or bail B as having a bend or offset extending nearly its whole length, and adapted to engage with the single pin 1) on the frame portion A.
In Fig. 3 I have represented a crank or bail, B, similar to that shown in Fig. 2, and engaging with two pins or studs, b, on the frame portion A.
This fastening is very secure, and adds to the appearance of the pocket-book or bag to which it is applied, and the length of the crank or bail B between its pivots enables it to be bent or deflected transversely more or less, in order that it shall en gage properly with the one or more pins or studs 1), and so draw and hold the frame portions tightly together. The crank or bail B has at its ofl'set portion B a finger-piece or knob, b, whereby it may be operated. a
I am aware of Letters Patent No. 309,397, granted to J. Mehl, Jr., December 16, 1884, which show a bag-frame having attached to the two portions knobs which snap by each other in closing, and a bar pivoted to one other knob to serve as an additional fastening. I do not desire -to include such a fastening in my invention.
An important advantage of making the bail of considerable length and pivoting the ends in line with each other to the portion A of the frame, and of arranging the one or more studs or pins 1) between the pivotal points of the bail, is that the bail has a considerable elasticity and may be sprung over the pins or studs and securely engage them; and after the bag has been in use for a long time-and the fastening has become somewhat loose, the offset portion of the bail may be bent or set inward slightly toward the line of the pivots, so that it will still spring strongly over the pins or studs.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the two portions A A of a pocket-book or bag frame, of a fastening consisting of a crank or bail having its two ends pivoted in line with each other to the frame portion A and deflected or offset between its ends, and one or more pins or studs, 1), fixed to the frame portion A between the pivotal points of the crank or bail, and with which the ofi'set portion of the crank or bail may be engaged to hold the frame portions together substantially as herein described.
