SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 485,230, dated November 1, 1892. Application filed June 25, 1892. Serial No. 437,989. (No model.)

Be it known that I, SIMON SCHEUER, of New York city, New York, have invented an Improved Frame for Pocket-Books, Purses, or Satchels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a frame for pocketbooks, purses, satchels, or similar articles having a double-acting catch which is so constructed that it engages both of the jaws and that it can be opened by pressing upon either one of its two buttons.

It consists in the various features of improvement, more fully pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a cross-section of a closed pocket-book frame provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, a cross-section of such frame when open; Fig. 3, an enlarged inner face view of the jaw a; Fig. 4, a top view of the spring-arm b; Fig. 5, a top view of the frame, showing it partly opened; and Fig. 6, a cross-section of a modification.

The letters a a represent the two jaws of a frame for pocket-books, purses, ladies satchels, and similar articles. They are connected at their ends by pivots a and are L-shaped in cross-section, as usual. Each of the jaws a a is provided with a perforation a a at its center. To the lower side of jaw a there is secured by pin 1) a spring-bar b. This spring is provided with a laterally-extending projection or arm 12*. To the free end of the spring-bar b is secured a button 0, and a similar button is secured to the arm 29 The buttons c c are placed at the same distance apart as the perforations a a when the pocketbook is closed. In this position the button 0 projects upwardly and outwardly through perforation a and the button 0 projects upwardly and outwardly through perforation a Thus the frame is locked in its closed position.

To open the frame, either one of the buttons c 0 may be depressed, and this constitutes the peculiarity of my construction. A pressure upon the button 0 will bend the spring-bar b downward, so that the button 0' is drawn out of its perforation to release the jaw a, and the catch is thus opened. A pressure upon the button 0 will directly lower this button suificiently to release the jaw and permit the frame tobe opened. A bevel 0 on button 0', permits the frame to be opened if the button is not completely depressed, as will be readily understood.

In Fig. 6 I have shown my invention applied to a purse-frame, in which a central partition (Z is used. In this modification the frame d of the partition is provided with the spying-bar d projecting underneath each one of the two jaws e 6. Both of these jaws are perforated for the reception of a button d secured to each end of the spring-bar. The purse may be opened by depressing either one of the buttons 01 to release the jaw engaged by such button.

What I claim is 1. The combination of a pair of pivotallyconnected perforated jaws with a spring-bar secured to the frame and extending underneath both jaws and with two buttons upon the spring-bar, of which each one is adapted to engage one of the perforated jaws, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of a pair of pivotallyconnected jaws, of which each is perforated, with a spring-bar connected to one of the jaws and having a laterally-extending arm, and with two buttons, of which one is secured to the free end of the spring-bar and the other is secured to the arm, substantially as specified.
