To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Louis B. PRAHAR, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bag, Pocket-Book, or Purse Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a front, elevation of a hand-bag frameto which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a part of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation of the same,taken through the line as a, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a part of a hand-bag frame, partly in section, and showinga modification in the arrangement. Fig. 5 is aplan view of the same, partly in section.

The object of this invention is to promote convenience in opening bags, pocket-books, and purses.

The invention consists in the combination, with the front bar of the. frame carrying the catches, and the knob attached to the locking-bar connected with the rear bar of the frame, of the inclined finger connected with the said front bar and resting against the said knob, whereby the bars of the frame will be forced apart by the movement of the locking bar in unfastening the frame, as will be hereinafter-fully described and claimed.

I will describe my invention as applied to hand-bag frames, but do not limit myself to that application, as it can be used with advantageupon the frames of pocketbooks and purses.

A represents the front bar, and B the rear bar, of a hand-bag frame, the end parts of which are bent downward and hinged to each other at their ends in the ordinary manner.

To the rear bar, B, of theframe are attached pairs of short posts, 0, to and between which are hinged caps D, to receive the ends of the bag-handle.

To the middle part of the rear bar, B, is attached a socket, E, to receive abar, F, placed 0 parallel with the said rear bar, B, and which is so formed as to allow the said barFto'have a movement toward and from the said rear bar, B. The bar F is held outward by a spring, G, placed within the socket F, and interposed between the said bar F and the bar B, as shown in Fig. 2.

With the center of the bar F, or with a short stud formed upon or attached to the said bar F, is connected a ball or knob, H, to which pressure can be applied to force the said bar F inward to unfasten the bag.

, To the ends of the locking-bar F are attached balls or knobs I, which may also be used for pressing the said bar F inward.

The upper parts of the socket E, about midway between its center andends, are cut away, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to uncover the bar F and allow the hook-catches J to engage with the said bar F..

The hook-catches J are attached to the front bar, A, of the frame, and between them is placed an inclined finger, K, which projects so as to rest against the side of the knob H, so that,when the bar F is pressed inward to withdraw it from the catches J and unt'asten the bag, the knob II will press the finger K outward and thus separate the bars A B. so that the bar F, when released and allowed to move outward, cannot engage with the catches J. By this construction the bag can be readily unfastened and opened with one hand, while the other hand supports the bag by its handle.

In the arrangement shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the barF is made in two parts, sliding longitudinally in the socket E, and provided with lugs F, to engage with recesses in the catches J. In this case the parts of the bar F are held apart by a spiral spring, G, interposed between their inner ends. In this case the fingers K are formed upon the outer edges of the catches J, and are operated by the said balls I, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. In both arrangements the fingers are connected with the catches attached to the forward bar of the frame, and are operated by knobs attached to the locking-bars.
