UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAX RUBIN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FASTENER FOR HAN D-SATCHELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,625, dated December 15, 1885.
Application filed October 9, 1885. Serial No. 179,443. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX RUBIN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Hand-Bags and other Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a handbag frame to which my improvement has been applied, shown fastened. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, shown unfastened. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same, shown fastened, and partly in section through the line a; as, Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to provide fastenings for hand-bags and other articles which shall be simple in construction and convenient and reliable in use, holding the frames to which they are applied securely closed and in place.
The invention consists in the combination, with the frame, of a projecting slotted plate attached to one part of the frame, and a projecting post having rounded end attached to the other part of the frame and engaging with 30 the said slotted plate, as will be hereinafter fully described and then claimed.
A B represent the parts of the frame of a hand-bag, purse, or other article, which parts are hinged together at their ends in the ordi- 5 nary manner. To the outer side of one of the parts, as B, is soldered or otherwise rigidly secured the edge of a plate, 0, which is slotted at right angles with the plane of the outer side of the frame B to receive the post D, 0 soldered or otherwise rigidly attached to the other part of the said frame. The post D is preferably made with a knob, E, on its upper end, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, in which case the upper part of the slot F in the plate 0 must be enlarged to allow the said knob to pass through; but the knob E is not essential, provided the outer end of the post D be rounded. The post D is made a little longer than the slot F in the plate 0, so that when pressed through thesaid slot the rounded end of the said post pressing against the said plate will spring the parts A B of the frame sufficiently to allow the post D to pass through the slot of the plate 0, where it will be held in place by the elasticity of the said frame until pressed back with sufficient force to overcome the said elasticity. The slot of the plate 0 is made of such a width that the post D will fit into it snugly, so that the parts A B of the frame will be held from longitudinal movement upon each other.
By this construction I produce a fastening simple in construction, reliable in use, and neat and ornamental in appearance.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a purse or satchel frame, of an inclined post having a rounded end projecting from one part of the frame and an inclined plate secured to the other part of the said frame and provided with a slot corresponding in shape with the end of the said post, substantially as herein shown and described.
MAX RUBIN.
