Description
. UNITED TES Awami OFFICE.
HENRY HOPFENSAGK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l95,32, dated September 11, 1877; application tiled August 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HoPFENsAcK, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Handle-Fastenings for Pocket-Books, Bags, and other articles of a similar nature, which improvement is fully set forth` in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents a sectional elevation of a .pocket-book provided with my improved handle-fastening. Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the fastenings detached. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a handle-fastening for pocket-books, porte-monnaies, travelingbags, satchels, and other articles of a similar nature, which is made of a strip of metal, provided with a crook near one end, rivet-holes at both ends, and bent to form two jaws, so that the same can be readily slipped over the edge of a pocket-book or other article, and se cured in position by a single rivet, and that when the fastening is secured its crook forms a firm and convenient support for a chain, cord, or other suitable handle.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a pocket-book, which is provided with a handle, B.
In the example shown in the drawing this handle consists of a braided silk cord; but it may be made of a chain, or of any other suitable material.
Said handle is connected to the pocket-book by means of two fastenings, a a, each of which is made of a strip of metal, which is ont or stamped out to the desired length, and provided with a crook, b, near one of its ends, and with a rivet-hole, c, at each end. After the crook b and the rivet-holes c have been produced, the strip is bent so las to form two jaws of equal length, (see Fig. 2,) said jaws being suftciently far apart to allow of slipping the fastening over the edge ofthe p0cketbook or other article. as shown in Fig. 1. After having been adjusted in the required position, the fastenings are rlnly secured, each by a single rivet, and the cord, chain, or other device intended for the handle is drawn through the crooks b, as shown.
Instead of using rivets for securing my fastening, each of the jaws lnight be provided with a pointed spur, which would be passed through the leather or other material and clinched on the opposite side; but I prefer to use the rivets.
By this simple and cheap device handles of difterentnatnre can be rmly secured to pocketbooks, porte-monnaies, satchels, and other similar articles with little trouble or loss of time.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A handle-fastening for pocket-books, traveling-bags, satchels, and other articles of a similar nature, composed of a strip of metal, provided with a crook, b, rivet-holes c, and bent to form two jaws, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 20th day of August, 1877.
