Description

G. B. JENKINSON.
TRAVELING-BAG. No.172,742. Patented Jan. 25,1876.
UND STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GEORGE JENKINSON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRAVELING-BAGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. ll72fi42, dated January 25, 1876 application filed December 16, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE B. J ENKINSON, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Bags, Shawl-Straps, and the like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the method of attaching the handles to shawl-straps, traveling-bags, and the like, the object of which is to facilitate the operation, and reduce the cost.
The accompanying drawing fully illustrates the nature and character of my invention, in whicht Figure 1 is a side view of the top portion of the frame and handle of a traveling-bag, showin g and illustrating my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of a shawl-strap bar provided with my improvement, Fig. 3 being a detail sectional view of the loop or clevis in which the handle is secured, and which embodies my invention, similar letters of reference indicating corresponding parts in the several figures.
Heretofore the handles of traveling-bags, &c., have been secured by cast-metal staples, or by malleable-metal staples so constructed as to require two screws or rivets to fasten or secure them to the bar of a shawl-strap or frame of a traveling-bag, &c., and also two operations of a machine to strike up said loop.
My invention consists in attaching the handle to the frame or bar 0 by means of a malleable-metal clevis A bent to a U-shape, connected to the frame or bar by a single rivet passing through a central opening, a, and to the handle by a transverse bar, b, which passes through the socketsi at the ends of the handles, thereby simplifying the attachment, making it stronger, and greatly reducing the cost of the article itself, as well as of its attachment to the bag, frame, or bar, and when the handles are secured therein concealing the rivets or ing a neat and handsome finish.
The clevises are designed and adapted to be secured either upon the side of the frames when two handles are used, or upon the top when but one handle is employed. They may also be adjusted either lengthwise or crosswise with equal facility.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination of the frame or bar 0, the handle having sockets 11 i, and the U-shaped piece of malleable metal having a central I opening, a, for the rivet by which it is secured to the frame or bar,.and a crossbar, b, passing through the sockets t i and over the head of the rivet, all as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEO. B. JENKINSON. Witnesses:
