Description

P. NERNEY.
DRIVING-REINS.
Patented Apr125, 1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER NERNEY, OF ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRIVING-REINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,440, dated April 25, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER NERNEY, of Attleborough, of the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Driving-Reims; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of Which- Y Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 an edge elevation, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of a driving-rein With my improvement. Fig. 4 is a top view of its slide.
The object o1" my invention is to enable a person te loop a driving-rein itself, and properly adjustthe loop, instead ot' having to such rein a separate adjustable holding loop or loops of the ordinary and well-known kind.
Horses that pull strongly on the bit generally require what are termed holding-loops tothe drivingreins, such being separate entirely i'rom the reins, and either sewed thereto or iixed to them by buckles. These holdingloops are seized,n by the hands ofthe driver.
In carrying out my invention I make use ot a slide, A, consisting ot' an arched rectangular frame, a, having a bar, b, extending across it at its middle. Next I run the rein B through such slide, over its cross-bar b, and under its two end bars, c c, after which I loop the rein, as shown at c, and carry it back and pass it around the cross-bar b, or so and back toward the loop e, in manner as shown.
The slide may be adjusted on the rein and the loop made longer or shorter, as occasion may require, thus saving all necessity of an extra loop or loops fastened to the rein, as described.
Such loops, when connected by a buckle, are liable to become loose and lost from the reins.
On pulling upon the loop cthe arched parts ot' the rein within the slide become driven closely or tightly together, so as not to slip in or through the slide.
I do not claim an elastic rein-pull adapted to be grasped by the hand, and composed of a tube or loop of rubber, provided at one end With a buckle, and at the other with a loop, and applied to a driving-rein by having the latter extended through the buckle and loop, all as shown in the United States Patent No. 71,412.
In carrying out my invention I do not use such a rein-pull, but simply employ an arched slide, A, as described, and carry the rein twice through it, or in the form of a loop, as represented, and thence fold it back upon the loop, whereby I obtain, by means of ythe rein itself, a rein-pull to be seized by the hand of a driver. Therefore,
I claim- In combination with the open arched slide A, provided With the cover-bar b, the rein A, looped or doubled on itself, and passed in opposite directions through the said slide, and around its bar b, all'as shown.
PETER NERNEY. Witnesses:
