Description

E. B. SOUTHWICK.
t t Bag Fastener. No. 98.527. Patented Jan. 4, 187).
N.-ETERS. FMOTOLITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON, D. C
maar sara @sind (fettine.
Letters .Patent No.,98,527, dated January 4, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-STRING- FASTENERS.
The Schedule referred to in these `Lettere Patent and making part of .the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. B; SoUTHWIoK, of Meudon, St. Joseph county, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bag-String Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, which will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new mode of fastening a string around the bag, and consistsofa metallic plate, with a slot in one end,`1'unning about one-third the length of plate, and dividing the plate at the end into two equal parts, a hole in the other part, very near the end, a point on one side of the hole that projects out and a little hack from the plate, and one on the other side that turns down and back, which I call the lock, as it holds thelstring fn'rn in its place.
The two parts each side of the slot are rounded at the ends, bent down a little, and twisted so that the inside of each is sonielower than the outside.
In the accompanying.drawings- A A represent the plate.
B, the hole through which the string passes.
O G C, the string passing around where the bag would be when in use.
then put the string through the string-hole in the bag,-
and draw it through to the fastener, and then tie a knot in the end. I then gather up the mouth of the bag in my left hand, and take the string in my right,
pull it up snug, and pass it over the plate near the hole B and through the slot D, thence round the bag, bringing it up inside of lock F; thence through' the slot- D again; thence around the bag, bringing'i't up f inside of point G; thence over that side of the plate, and around under hoth the parts E E, that form the slot; thence under the lock F, drawing the string tight each time.
` In unfastening the string, I take the loose end in my right hand, and with t-he thumb of that hand press the string down until it will pass out under the lock, thenpass it back the way it came, leaving it once through the slot.
The use and benefit of the lock F is to prevent the string getting loose 'by a jerk on the loose end.
The point G prevents the fastener turning round when the stringis jerked against the lock.
The slotD is to hold the string from slipping; after the last time around the string is drawn tight' under the slot and lock.
Having thus described my invention,I do not claim as new a bag-string fastener composed of a metallic perforated plate, provided with notches wherein to lockthe binding-string, for these have been used in various forms, in some respect similar 'to the inven- Y tion herein described; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improvement in bag-string fasteners, consisting of the curved plate A, when provided with the perforation B, the point or projection G, and the bent projection or lock F, when these parts are constructed and arranged in relation to each other, precisely as herein shown and described.
