UNrr-e 'STATES PATENT JOHN w. REGAN, OF BOSTON, MASSAOHUSETTS.
HARNESS.
i-.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,529, dated March 10, 1885.
Application filed December 15, 1884. (No model.) A
To all? whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JOHN W.- REGAN, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Harness, ofwhich the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings represen'ting like parts.
This invention has for its objectto provide suitable means for looking the usual slide-loop employed to confine a loop such as commonly formed in a back-band, back-strap, or checkrein of a harness.
In harnesses of ordinary construction-as, for instance, in the check-rein-the strap is looped and secured by a buckle, and two slideloops have been employed, one confining the straps near the buckle and the other near the opposite end of the loop, which is usually provided with a ring, and it has been difficult to retain the Said slide-loops in proper position by friction, as the straps having a tendency to spread apart cause thesaid loops to slip back, thus rendering the check rein troublesome and unsightly. To remedy this evil, I combine with the usual ring connected with the loop` and to which other parts of the harness may be attached` or with the buckle, a locking device, shown in this instance as composed of a piece of wire bent to form an eye, and two spring-arms provided at their ends with projections, said spring-arms being adapted to pass through the slide-loop, and the projections springing over the edges thereofpreventing the said slide-loop from slipping backward.
Figure l represents in plan view a portion of-a checkrein, part of the loop being broken away, showing my improved locking device in elevation. Fig. 2 shows a form of locking device to be attached to a ring. Fig. 3 shows a modified form for attachment to a buckle.
The strap A, of usual construction, bent to form a loop, the buckle B for securing the same, ring C, through which the loop passes, and slide-loops D D for confining the loop, are all as usual, so need not be herein described. The strap A is provided with a locking device, a, for retaining the slide-loop D in proper position near the ring. This locking device, as herein shown, consists of apiece of wire bent to form an eye,.c, of sufficient size to tit loosely on the ring G, and two springarms, c2 a2, Athe ends of which are turned ontward, forming projections a3 ai.
Vhen itis desired to lock the sliding loop D, the spring-arms c a2 are compressed sufficiently to allow the projections c3 a to enter the slide-loop, which is then passed entirely over the same when the spring-arms are released and the projections engage the end of the slide-loop, thus looking the same in the desired position. To release the slide-loop, the reverse of this operation is performed.
When desired to lock a slide-loop-as, for instance, D'-near a buckle, the locking device shown in Fig. 3 may be employed, the eye a. being adapted to engage the tongue of the buckle B, the said locking device being operated as before described.
By employing a locking device for retaining the slide-loops in position their tendency to slip backward, which frequently happens where friction is depended upon for holding them in place, is overcome, as the straps having a tendency to spread apart soon overcome the friction of the slide-loops and they slip back, rendering the loop both troublesome and unsightly.
The invention is not limited to the precise construction of locking device herein shown,
as it is obvious that various modifications may be devised without departing therefrom.
I claim- The combination, with a strap provided with a slide loop, ofa locking device having springarms with end projections to pass through the loop and engage one edge thereof, Substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this Specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN YV. BEGAN.
