BREAST-STRAP SLIDE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,145, dated May 25, i880.

Be it known that I, SETE WARD, of Princeton, in the county of Gibson, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast-Strap Slides; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a breast-strap and slide for harness, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a central section of my breaststrap and slide. Figs. 2 andS are detailed views of the slide.

A represents the breast-strap slide, made of iron or other metal, and in form or shape similarpto those now in use. Near each end of the slide, just below the eye or loop B, is a stationary pin or tongue, a, -which Vis slightly inclined downward, to buckle the ends ofthe stra-p to. Immediately below this tongue, on each side, is an aperture, II).

C represents the breast-strap; D D, the snap-hooks, and E E the loops.

In making up breast-straps when using my slide it is not necessary to cut the strap as long as it has heretofore been done. Usually the strap is cutfjfour feet eight` inches long; but with my slide it can be shortened to three feet six inches, as there is no sewing or length of laps to take off. i

The manner of making is as follows: Cut the strap the length stated, (three and onehalf feet,) dress up the edges in the usual manner and skive the ends, and punch holes about one and a half inch from each end of the strap. Then pass the strap around `the slide and through the loops B at each end; slip on a snap-hook, D, at each end of the strap, and also a loop, E, if desired. Then turn the ends inward and downward, forcing the ends of the strap down through the loops until the holes reach the standing tongues a,

when the ends of the strap are fastened on said tongues, and then the outside part of the strap pulled up, which holds the ends down on the tongues,A making all secure. IThis makes a cheap and serviceable breast-strap.

The object of the perforations or apertures b is to make it convenient to unfasten the ends of the strap from the tongues when the straps become set and hard to unbuckle by pushing with the finger or with some hard substance through said apertures.

It will readily be seen that quite an amount of both leather and labor is saved by my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The breast-strap slide A, provided with the loops B B, tongues a a, and apertures bib, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The combination of the slide A, having loops B, tongues a, and apertures b, the strap C, having a hole in cach end, and the snaphooks D, substantially as andfor the purposes herein set forth.
