UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIG REINHOLD SPEER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPRQVEMENT IN SHAWL-STRAP BARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159.6l6, dated February 9, 1875; application filed May 15, 1874.
To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, REINEOLD SPEER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Combined Shawl-Strap Bar and Buckle, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a top View of my combined shawl-strap bar and buckle. Fig. 2 is atransverse section of the same on the line c c, Fig. l; and-Fi g. 3, a transverse section on the line 7c k, Fig. l. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
- The object of this invention is to produce a shawl-strap bar, which will also constitute a buckle for each of the shawl-straps with which it is connected, thereby to dispense with the detached buckles now used on the straps, and insure a definite position for the fasteningtongue of each strap.
Heretofore the straps were drawn through loops of 'the' bar, and had buckles affixed to them, said buckles being detached from the bar.
The expense of the buckles is quite an'item in the manufacture of shawlstraps; and, moreover, such buckles, when applied to the straps, are liable to come tothe sides of the strapped bundles, causing want of symmetry, and liable to tear the light dresses of ladies, by whom they are frequently used in the summer season.
My invention consists in so constructing the shawl-strap bar that it constitutes the frame of the buckle, and in forming the buckletongue or its equivalent on said bar, so that it is only necessary to secure said tongue to the bar to have a perfect buckle, thus locating the latter definitely, and dispensing with the use of separate buckle-frames.
In the drawing, the letter A represents the shawl-strap bar, made of leather, covered metal, or other proper material, and provided with suitable rings a a for securing the ordinary handle. This bar is made, as usually, with a pair of slots, b b, for each of the straps B used thereon. One end of each strap B is laid around one of the narrow parts d, which is left at the outer side of one slot b to form a loop around such part d, and is stitched to the body of the strap, so that the said strap is thus definitely secured to the part d. To the same part d is hinged the tongue c, forming, in conjunction with the middle rib, f, which is left between the slots b, a complete buckle.
The perforated loose end of the strap can be drawn under the rib f, and the tongue e put through it, as shown at the right end of Fig. l and in Fig. 2.
The left-hand end of Fig. l represents the strap unbuckled, and so does Fig. 3.
In place of the tongue e in each buckleframe, a clamp-tongue may be employed to hold the straps against the middle rib, f, thus dispensing with the necessity for having holes in the straps.
I claim as my invention- Ashawl-strap bar, in which the part d forms the pivot for the tongue e, and the middle rib, f, serves for the front of the buckle, which is formed in the bar A, substantially as hereinbefore described and set forth.
REINHOLD SPEER.
