Description
"JAMES S. TOPHAM.
Shawl Strap and Traveling Bag Handles.
No. 123,525. Patented Feb. 6,1872
W i'i'zesss. 1 ra/emiafi I I traveling-bag handle, and is an improvement JAMES S. TOPHAM, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OFVGOLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHAWL-STRAP AND TRAVELING-BAG HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,525, dated February 6, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. TOPHAM, of \Vashington City, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shawl-Straps and Traveling-Bag Handles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view ofhandle with loops attached. Figs. 2 and3 are perspective views, showing modifications of loop.
My invention relates to a shawl-strap and upon the loop of my former one, the application of which was filed November 9, 1871; and consists in making the loop of cast or malleable iron, the frame having a bridge or transverse bar in the center, and a ring cast thereon for attaching the loop to the end of the handle, the bridge forming a support for the ring, and a slot at the same time on either side for the reception of the strap, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
A represents the frame of the loop; B, the the bridge; O,the ring; D,the straps; and E, the handle. The frame is made of an oblong shape in length. having the sides inclined enough either way from the center to permit of the straps being passed freely through the slots under the bridge. The ring is cast onto the bridge in the center, and in a line longitudinally to the frame.
The loop thus constructed is connected by the ring with the eye of the cap 60 attached to the end of the handle.
The modifications of loop shown in Figs. 2 and 3, form a combined loop and buckle, the strap being attached and buckled on the loop, thus dispensing with a buckle which the strap would otherwise require as ordinarily, and thereby renderingthe sale and manufacture of the handle still cheaper, the buckle having an eye or loop, b, above the tongue 0 by which it can be attached to the eye of the cap a on the end of the handle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The loop consisting of frame A, with the bridge B and ring 0, bridge B constructed to, form a support for ring 0, and a slot at the same time on either side for the reception of a strap, substantially for the purpose as shown and set forth.
2. In a shawl-strap and traveling-bag handle, the combination of the loop A O, with the rigid curved handle E, substantially as shown and set forth.
3. A buckle provided with an eye or loop, b,
for attaching it to the ends of the handle E,
substantially as described.
As evidence that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES S. TOPHAM.
