1 claim. (C1. 22a-ssj This invention relates to carrying handles especially adapted for attachment to cylindrical containers such as vacuum bottles and the like.

It is one of the principal objects of the invention to provide a collapsible handle attached to a pair of adjustable clamping bands which are readily adjustable to cylindrical containers of various diameters and lengths.

These and other objects Will appear as my invention is more fully hereinafter described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and finally pointed out in the appended claim;

Figure 1 is a side view of a carrying handle made in accordance'with my invention and shown applied to a vacuum bottle.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the carrying handle removed from the vacuum bottle.

Figure 3 is an end view of Figure 2.

Figure 4 is a modied form of the invention shown permanently attached to the wall of a vacuum bottle or any other container.

Figure 5 is a fragmentary side view of a further modified form of the invention.

Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line 6 6 of Figure 5.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing.

ln Figures 1, 2 and 3, reference numerals 1 and 2 indi cate a pair of circular, adjustable bands each of whose end portion is formed with circumferentially spaced apart transverse slots 3 to receive a latch generally indicated at 4 attached to the opposite end of each band. Thus, the bands may be circumferentially adjusted into tight gripping engagement with cylindrical containers or other articles of various diameters.

The opposite, or top side, of each band is formed with a projection generally indicated at 5 which is rolled back on itself as at 6 to swingably support a pair of links indicated at 7 of substantially rectangular formation. The top ends of the links are pivotally attached by loops 8 formed on the ends of a handle 9 by turning the end portions of the handle inwardly and attaching them to the under side of the handle by any suitable means such as spot welding, riveting, or the like.

As shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, the handle may be swung downwardly to the right or to the left to lie against the wall of the container for convenience in placing the container in a lunch kit or in any other carton o1 package.

In the modified form of the invention shown in Figure 4, the handle 9A and the links 7A are identical with those shown in Figure 1 but the bottom ends of the links instead of being connected to clamping bands as indicated at 1 and 2 in Figure l, are pivotally attached to bearing brackets 11 which are permanently secured by any suitable means such as soldering, riveting, or the like,to the wall of a container or any other article, a fragment of which is indicated at 12. Each bracket 11 is formed with a projection 13 which is rolled back on itself to provide bearings for the bottom ends of the links 7A.

In the further modication shown in Figure 5, the links 7B are connected to the clamping bands 1A and 2A in the same manner as that shown in'Figures 1 to 3, but the top end of one link is pivotally attached to the rolled back end 14 of a bar 15 which is telescopically slidable within an elongated sleeve 16 Whose one end is provided with a bearing 17 for pivotal attachment to the tsp end of the other link. This arrangement enables the handle to be extended or retracted in accordance with variable spacing of the bands in attaching the same to a container or other articles of various lengths.

For locking the bar 15 within the sleeve 16 in various adjusted positions with respect to each other, I provide the bar 15 (see Fig. 6) with a plurality of spaced apart apertures 18 adapted to selectively receive one or more depressed surfaces 19 found in the top surface of the sleeve.

While I have shown particular forms of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

VA carrying handle of the class described comprising in combination a pair of spaced apart circumferentially adjustable and lockable clamping bands, a pair of links pivotally attached at their bottom ends to said bands, a handle pivotally attached at both of its ends to the top ends of said links whereby said handle may be collapsed from an operative position to an inoperative position, said handle comprising a flat elongated bar rolled back on itself at one of its ends and thereby pivotally attached to the top end of one of said links and slidably mounted within a llat hollow sleeve provided with a transverse bearing at one of its ends opposite to the rolled back end of said elongated bar and thereby pivotally attached to the top end of the other of said links whereby said handle may be extended or retracted with variable spacing of said bands with respect to a cylindrical object embraced by them, said bar having a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart apertures formed therein, and said sleeve having at least one depression formed in one of its walls for selective engagement with said apertures for locking said bar and sleeve in various longitudinally adjusted positions with respect to each other in accordance with variable spacing between said clamping bands.
