Description

JOSEPH BARROVV, 0F MOBILE, ALABAMA.
Lettera Patent No. 64,273, dated April 30, 1867.
IMPROVED BUCKLE.
@Ltr flgrbnle ntmh to in ligen Edius. ntmt :mh making pmt nf its sinn.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, Jesi-:rn BAnnow, of Mobile, in the county of Mobile, and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful improvement in Buckles and I do hereby declare that the following is u full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in ,the art to make and use the saule.l reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a buckle to be used for harnesses, clothing, or any other purpose for which buckles are ordinarily employed, orto which the present form of bucklemay be applicable or adaptable; and it consists in a novcl construction of the same, whereby it can be readily fastened to or unfastened from the article upon which it is to be used, and many other iinportan't advantages secured, as will be obvious from the following detail description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, in whichf- Figure 1 is a front view of the buckle, showing u. strap fastened and buckled to it'; and
Figure 2, a section taken in the plane of the line :v 1:,ig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the lframe of the buckle, having near its central portion, B, two parallel cross-bars, C C. on cach of which is hung a tongue, D, extending in opposite directions, and resting by their outer ends upon the opposite ends, E, of the buckle-frame, F, a cross-clasp or band fixed to the front side of the buckle-frame, .and at or near its centre, under which clasps the ends of the strap G are passed, as plainly shown in the drawings. By means of the two tongues D, which, as is obvious, are independent of cach other, the buckle can b e first secured. or buckled to one en d o f a strap, for instance, to which it is to be applied, and
then passing the other eiid of such strap underthe other end of the' buckle-frame and inserting the tongue of that end in the proper aperture of the strap, its two ends are thus brought and secured together; the fastening of the buckle to the strap'by simply buckling it, as explained, enabling itvto be readily detached therefrom when so desired, the advantages and importance of which are obvious. In lieu of the two cross-bars C, only one may be used, the two tongues being hung to it, but in such a manner as to swing independently of each other.
I claim as new, and desire to securev by Letters Patent- The buckle, constructed o'f a continuous rigid `frame A, with bars C, onwhich are hung the tongues D, having independent motions, and the clasp F, for holding the ends of the strap, asherein represented and described.
JOSEPH BARROW.
