.mumm- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED AUGUSTUS GRACE, OF NELSON, AND THOMAS SAMUEL GRACE, OF
BLENHEIM, NEW ZEALAND.
BUCKLE.
s'ncIFIcATIoN forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,902, dated November S, 1898-.
Application led October 20,1897. Serial No. 655,842. (N mleL) To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, ALFRED AUGUSTUS GRACE, gentleman, residing at Nelson, and` THOMAS SAMUEL GRACE, clergyman, residing at Blenheim, in the Colony of New Zealand, British subjects, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Buckle-Fastener, of which the following is4 a specification.
1o The objects of the invention are to provide improvements in buckles and the modes of fastening buckles to stirrup-leathers, collars, and the like. In the buckles now in use the buckle is permanently fastened to the stirrupleather, collar, or the like by means of sewing, stitching, or riveting, and the buckle is then ready for use.
Now our invention essentially consists of a buckle and buckle-fastening which render 2o sewing, stitching, or riveting unnecessary. The buckle is also of such a form and shape that it is its own keeper.
We eect our purpose of making a buckle which requires no sewing, stitching, or riv- 2 5 eting by an application to buckles and buckle-fastenings of a method or contrivance somewhat similar tothe reef -knot method used in tying ropes.
Our buckle may be constructed of any kind 3e of metal or of any other suitable material.
We will now describe our buckle and Inode of fastening, and for this purpose we will refer to the annexed drawings, in which-- Figure l is a top plan View of one form of 3 5 our buckle', showing the strap connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a Side View, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view.
Our buckle is especially well adapted for use as a buckle for fastening stirrup-leathers 4o and, as illustrated, is constructed of the hollow square, oblong, or semicircle A A, to which is attached the movable piece or tongue B.
C is a pin or retaining-bar which is fixed to the piece D, so that thel two form a T-bar.
vleather is then held against the bar D the buckle is by that means fastened to the strap. The other end of the strap is then put through the square, oblong, or semicircle A A in the ordinary way.
The hollow oblong or loop E forms the slot or keeper for the leather, and therefore our buckle requires no auxiliary or additional keepers of leather.v
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A buckle consisting of a buckle-frame, a tongue pivoted to one of the cross-bars thereof, a loop set off from said cross-bar in a plane 7.o at right angles to the buckle-frame, anda retaining bar or piece projecting from the outer cross-bar of said loop into the plane of the buckle-frame, for the purpose set forth.
2. A buckle consisting of a buckle-frame, a tongue pivoted to one of the cross-bars thereof, a loop set oft' from said cross-bar in a plane at right angles to the buckle-frame, and a T- bar projecting from the outer cross-bar of the loop into the plane of the buckle-frame, sub- 8o stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED AUGUSTUS GRACE. THOMAS SAMUEL GRACE. In presence of- PEECY B. ADAMS, ALED. THos. JONES.
