SAMUEL P. PARMLY, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
Letters Patent No. 91,362, dated June 15 1869. d
IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-FASTENERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. PARMLY, of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented anew and improved Bag-Fastener; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, 'and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a side View of my improved bagfastener. l
Figure 2 is a detail face view of the star attachment for holding the string.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a novel and convenient device fol-closing bags of all kinds, and consists in the combination, with a knotted string, of a novel starshapedplate, for fastening the same to the bag, and of a peculiarly-bent wire, which is held to the bag by the said starshaped plate, and which is to secure the outer end of the knotted string.
A, in the drawing, represents a bag, of suitable kind.
On the inner side of the same is secured a sheetmetal plate, B, which has projecting pointed arms ac, that make it look like a star, as in fig. 2.
The points or arms a of this plate arcbent at right angles to the body of the plate, and are then caused to pierce the bag, so that they project from the outside.
They are then bent inward, over the circular portion b, of a bent wire, 0, so that they will firmly secure said wire to the outside of the bag, as is clearly shown in fig. 1. I
This wire is bent into a peculiar form, is coiled as at 0, near the circle I), and then one end, 0, is bent into the form of a book, while the other end, (1, is
placed through this hook to project outward from the same, its spring-power holding it against the book, as in fig. 1.
i ,A string, D, is with one end fitted through the bag,
and through a slot, or aperture, j; of the plate B, and has a knot on its inner end, to be thus retained and fastened by the plate B.
This is wound around the bag, and is, near its outer end, provided with a series of knots, g g.
Its outer part, when the bag is to be closed, is forced under the tongue (1, between the same and the book 0, so that the tongue will hold it by means of one of the knots g, as is clearly shown in the drawing.
This fastener cannot become spontaneously opened, but can readily be nnfastened by drawing the string out from under the tongue d.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A bag-fastener, consisting of the knotted string D, star-shaped, perforated or notched plate B, and wire book 0, all arranged, combined, and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 25th day of March, 1869.
Witnesses: S. P. PARMLY.
