A. MAFFETT. BAG TIE.
No. 410.172. Patented Sept 3, 1889..

N PETERS. Phma-Lime m hm, waeain ton, D c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT MAFFETT, OF I-IAYESVILLE, OHIO.
BAG-TIE.
V SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,172, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed May 18, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT MAFFETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hayesville, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Bag- Tie, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in bag-ties; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved device applied to a bag, and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the tie removed.
The bag A is of the usual or any preferred form and forms no part of my invention.
My improved tie consists of two members B O, constructed of spring-wire and adapted to clasp the bag, as shown. The member B is provided at one end with an eye D, forming one-half of the hinge which connects it to the member O, and at its other ends it is provided with a hook B, which is' adapted to engage loops on the member C. At about its center the member B is provided with the ring or eye F, through which a strap G is passed, and the said strap is secured to the bag so as to attach the tie thereto.
The member O of the tie is provided at one end with an eye H, which is engaged with the eye D of the member B, thereby forming a hinge which connects the two members together. The opposite end of the member 0 is doubled on itself, so as to form a series of loops or rings I, which are engaged by the hook E of the member -B to close the bag. From the inner loop or ring I the end of the wire is extended backward and wrapped around the main portion of the member O, and is then doubled on itself to form the loop J, which serves as a handle.
In practice the tie is attached to the bag by means of the strap G, as shown and described, and when the bag has been filled the open end of the same is bunched in the usual Serial No. 311,250. (No model.)
manner, and the member C is then brought around the bag and the proper loop or ring I engaged over the hook E, thereby effectually fastening the bag.
It will be observed that I have provided a very simple and efficient bag-fastener, which can be manufactured and sold at a trifling cost, and which can be easily manipulated. By being constructed of springwire the tie will be caused to yield slightly to the pressure of the contents of the bag, so as to prevent cutting of the bag. By providing the loop J a handle is formed, so that the tie can be easily grasped and operated, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is t 1. In a bag-tie of the character described, the member 0, having its free end doubled on itself to form a series of rings I and then extended backward and doubled on itself to form the loop J, in combination with the member 13, hinged thereto at one extremity and provided withan engaging hook at its other extremity, substantially as described.
' 2. The improved bag-tie herein described and shown, consisting of the members B O,
constructed of spring-wire, and having engag- 7 ing eyes forming a hinge, the member B being further provided with a hook E and the loop F, and the member O having the free end of the spring-Wire doubled on itself to form a series of rings I, and then extended backward and doubled on itself to form the loop J, adapted to serve as a handle, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT MAFFETT.
Witnesses:
H. H. MOWERS, H. BUTCHER.
