I J. M. LUCAS. SAFETY DEVICE FOR POGKET BOOKS.
No. 451,829. Patented May 5, 1891.
UNITED STATES JOHN MATTIIElV LUCAS, OF OADIZ, QHI O.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR POCKET-BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,829, dated May 5, 1891.
Application filed February 12, 1891. Serial No. 381,187. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN MATTHEW LUCAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cadiz, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Pocket- Books, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what is generally known as safety devices for hand bags, pocket-books, portfolios, &c., which are usually earried about the person, and for convenience are secured to the garment, belt, or other portions of the wearing-apparel.
The object of the invention is to guard against theloss of such parcels through pickpockets or by accident, and aims to provide a holder that will be simple, strong, and lasting, which can be economically constructed and capable of being quickly applied to the belt or garment, and which can be disposed at any convenient point. A
The improvement consists of the novel features which hereinafter will be more fully described and claimed, and which are shown in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, showing the pin swung back a little from the base-plate. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the device, showing the catch for the hook thrown up by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the base-plate is formed. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the device. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line X X of Fig. l. Fig. 6 is a detail View of the catch for the hook. Fig. 7 is an end view of the catch.
The device comprises the base-plate A, pin B, hook O, and the catch D, the hook and the catch having independent pivotal connection with the base-plate and mounted on the same cross-bar E which connects the cars a. The hook C is of usual shape and is provided near its free end with the projection f, which extends over the catch D and retains the latter in position when pressed down on the hook. The catch is formed from a single piece of material and comprises the parallel side bars d and the cross-bar d, the latter flaring upwardly to permit the insertion of the finger beneath it. The side bars flare inwardly and are adapted to spring over the edges of the hook and retain the free end thereof in a compressed position. The base A is contracted in width at its middle, and is provided with the ears a, and at one end with the lip g, which is bent around the closed end of the pin B, and at its opposite end with the projecting portion 11, which is bent back on the base and is provided at its ends with thehooks or retaining-points 7L, which engage with the ends of the twinpin B. By having the middle portion of the base-plate reduced pressure can be easily applied to the members of the twin pin B to disengage the ends thereof from the hooks h, and provision is had to form the ears a.
The device is applied to the garment and secured thereto by the pin B and the hooks h, and the satchel, hand-bag, or parcel is engaged with the hook O and held in engagement therewith by the catch D.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with a base-plate provided with means to secure it to a convenient portion of the wearing-apparel, of a hook pivotally connected with the base-plate, and a catch for closing and fastening the open end of the said hook mounted and adapted to turn independently on the same pivot which connects the hook with the baseplate, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a base-plate provided with means to secure it to a portion of the wearing-apparel and the hook pivoted to the base-plate, of a catch mounted on the same pivot with the hook and adapted to turn freely and independently on the said pivot, and comprising a cross-bar to extend over the hook and flaring sides to be sprung over and bind on the edges of the said hook, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, with a base-plate provided with fastening means and a hook pivoted to the base-plate and having the projectionf, of the catch mounted on the same pivot with the hook and adapted to turn freely and independently on the said pivot, and comprising a cross-bar which extends lOO 10 adapted to have its ends engaged by the hooks h, and the catch mounted on the same pivot with the hook, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN MATTHEW LUCAS.
