Description

(No Model.)
S. KNIGHTON.
BAND TIE N5. 535,502. Patented Mar. 12, 1895.
NITED STATES PATENT Grrroa,
SAMUEL KNIGHTON, OF WINNIPEG, CANADA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES E. KAVANAGH, OF SAME PLACE.
BAN D-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,502, dated March 12, 1895.
Application filed November 3, 1894- Serial No. 527,791- (No model.)
To all whom; it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL KNIGHTON, a citizen of Canada, residing at Winnipeg, in the county of Selkirk and Province of Mauitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Ties; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a band tie for va rious purposes, and it has for its object to produce a device at a minimum expense, which will be useful for a variety of purposes, such for instance as tying up packages, as a shawl-strap, a belt, or the like.
I shall not undertake to describe all the purposes to which my device might be putas a description of the construction and mode of operation will be sufficient to enable any person to use the device for such purpose as he may find it applicable.
In the accompanying drawings, to which similar reference letters are made, indicating corresponding parts in the two views, Figure 1, is a perspective view of the improved device in an open position, and Fig. 2, is a similar view in a closed position.
In carrying out myinvention, I take a strap A, which may be of leather, light sheet-metal, or other suitable material, and of a sufficient length and width, and provide it for a sufficient distance in its length with holes or apertures a. I provide one end of the strap with a loop I), which may be secured thereto by placing the end of the strap through one branch of the loop and securing the end of the strap upon itself by stitches c, or the like. I provide the opposite end with a loop (1, which is designed to be passed through the loop I). I also provide the strap at or adjacent to the end carrying the metallic loop 01, and on its inner side, with an upwardly-disstrap, which secure the metallic loop D, and V the whole riveted or otherwise secured together.
The strap is provided on its outer side and preferably near the loop b, with a stud f, which may have an angular head 91, and is designed to take into the holes or apertures Ct.
In practice, when it is desired to secure a package or bundle, the strap being placed around the article or articles, the loop cl, and the end of the strap to which it is attached, is passed through the loop I), on the opposite end of the strap, and when drawn sufficiently tight around the article, the stud is let into the desired hole or aperture in the strap Where the tie will be secure. By then slipping the hook e, under the bodyot' the looped band or strap, the free end will be retained in position.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described tie or band clasp comprising the strap having the loop I), at one end and the apertures a, at intermediate points in its length and the stud adapted to engage said apertures, and also having its opposite end passed through the loop 17, and provided with the hook or clip 6, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL KNIGHTON.
Witn esses ALBERT EVANS, WALTER CHESTERTON.
