Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24:, 1914.
Application filed May 6, 1912. Serial No. 695,534.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CARL C. VAN DYKE, a citizen of the city of St. Paul, county of Ramsey, State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Package- Ties, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package having my invention attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail plan view partly broken away of the invention. Fig. 3 is a side View of Fig. 2.
My invention relates to package ties and has for its object to provide an economical device which can be readily used as a substitute for string in tying packages of letters and the like.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 represents a strap or band having one end provided with a single aperture 6 and the opposite end thereof with spaced apertures or eyelets 4.
2 is a hook and clasp member comprising an intermediate shank portion 7 one end of which is bent outwardly and rearwardly and then inwardly and forwardly upon itself to form rearwardly extending side loops 10 and 11 and a forwardly extending central loop 12, the opposite end of the shank being provided with a loop 13. This loop 13 is formed by bending the free end 14: and 15 of arms 16 and 17 of the shank 7 outwardly and then upwardly and inwardly this bringing the opening or loop 13 above the horizontal plane of the shank. A cord 3 comprising a free end 3 and a looped or doubled portion 18 is attached to the hook and clasp member as about to be described.
The operation of the package binder is as follows: The strap or band (1) is placed about the upper end of the ackage as indicated in Fig. 1; the cord (3 is passed over and around each side of the package as shown, thence through an eyelet or eyelets (4) in the lower end of the strap or band (1) as indicated; the two branches of the cord are then joined at the point (5) from which a single cord (3*) is passed around the package to engage with the combination hook and clasp (2) substantially shown; the hook and clasp is fastened to the upper end of the strap or band (1) by passing downward or upward through the eyelet (6) and is carried underneath and over the strap or band (1) or it may be carried over and underneath the strap or band (1). The cord (3) is secured to the upper end of the strap or band (1) by passing through the eye (6 formed by the shank (7) of the combination hook and clasp and the strap or band (1) substantially as shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3. The single cord (3) is secured to the combination hook and clasp (2) by first passing it around the hook in the position as shown in Fig. 3 and thence into the spring clasp (9) as shown in Fig. 2 and Fig. 3; or the cord (3 may be secured to the combination hook and clasp (2) by passing around in the reverse direc tion from that above described and by securing by the spring clasp (10) or the cord (3) may be secured to the combination hook and clasp (2) by passing it through the hook (8) in either of the above directions and be then secured by the spring clasp (11) as shown in Fig. 2, all of which is substantially set forth.
What I claim as new and desire Letters Patent for in the package tie is,
1. A package tie comprising a band adapted to be flexed into U-shape around the end of a package, the ends of said band being perforated, in combination with a hook and clasp member inserted through the perforation in one end of the band, and a cord passing between said band and the shank of said hook and clasp member, said cord being divided into two parts at one end to form a loop, said two parts passing through the other perforated end of said band, and means on said hook and clasp member for clamping the free end of said cord.
2. A package tie comprising a band having perforated ends, a hook and clasp member having its shank and one end inserted through one of said perforated ends, and having its other end looped around said band, a cord passing between said shank and said band, said cord being divided into two parts at one end to form a loop, said two parts passing through the other of said.
perforated ends, and means on said hook and clasp member to which one of the ends of said cord is attachably secured.
