SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,696, dated March 18, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DON ALANSON PHELPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parcel-Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

The object of my invention is to construct a parcel or package carrierin such a manner that the fastening-cords may be attached to and clamped in suitable spring fastening devices attached to the ends of a suitable handle without having to tie said cords, as will more fully hereinafter appear.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved parcelcarrier in an operative position. Fig. 2 is a top view of one portion of the split handle, showing one mode of connecting the spring fastening devices thereto. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of one of the spring fastening devices detached from the handle.

My improved parcel-carrier is preferably constructed as follows: The handle A is composed of two longitudinal semi-cylindrical portions glued or otherwise suitably secured together, one of said portions having in its inner fiat surface the longitudinal grooves a a- -and cross-grooves a, as shown in Fig. 2.

' The spring clamp or fastening devices are each preferably formed from one continuous piece of spring-wire, and are so bent fromthe center of each piece as to form the parallel portions 12 I), end portion 1), eyes B B, downward extensions 0 G, loops D D, upturned portions E E, the latter terminating in the hooked portions 6 e, as shown. portions 0 and E of the fastening device form a clamp to retain the fastening-cords between them, as will more fully hereinafter appear.

The parallel portions bb and end .portion 1) of each spring-fastening is placed in the parallel and cross grooves in one of the handle portions, as shown in Fig. 2, after which the other portion of the handle is glued or otherwise suitably secured thereto, thus serving to retain said spring-fastenings to place in the ends of the handle without danger of becom- The parallel ing disengaged therefrom or turning. 1 One end of each fastening-cord F is passed through the eyes B, as shown in Fig.1, and a knot tied in the end thereof, which knot bears against being pulled through the eyes; The other end of said cord is passed through said eyes in an opposite direction to provide a drawloop for the parcel.

The operation of my device is as follows: lhe fastening-cords are made of any desired length, and when secured in the eyes of the fastening device, as aforedescribed, form a loop, which is slipped over each end of the package or parcel to be carried, when the free end of the cord is drawn up until the loops are taut around the package, after which said free end of each cord is passed under one of the hooks e and pressed down between the clamp portions 0 and E, as shown. The clamp portions, in connection with the two angles formed in cords I at the hooks e and eyes B, serve tosecurely retain the free ends of the cords from slipping, and in this manner heavy packages maybe securely carried.

WVhile it is preferred to connect'the spring fastening devices in the handle, as set forth, any other suitable means may be employed for making such connection.

If desired, a suitable base maybe connected to the looped portions D, by means of screws or rivets, when the parcel-carrier will answer all purposes of the ordinaryshawl-strap.

The advantages of my device are apparent. It is simple in construction and effective in operation.

By the use of said device all tying of cords or buckling of straps is dispensed with, thus saving much time.

The device is cheap of manufacture and will answer all purposes of any parcel-carrier, and when provided with a suitable base, as aforementioned, will answer all purposes of a shawl-strap.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

Aparcel-carrier consisting of the springwire fasteners bent to form the retaining portions 12, eyes B, parallel clamp portions C and E, base-loops D, and hooks e, the parallel clamp portions being bent downward and upone of said eyes, preventing said cord from split handle, one portion of said handle having in its fiat inner face the longitudinal and :0

cross grooves a a a a, the parallel portions 19 b, and end portion 1) of each fastener resting in said grooves, and suitable means for fastening the two portions of said handle together.
