IMPROVEMENT IN HANKS FOR SAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,033, dated November 14, 1871; antedated November 9, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
' curing a jib to a stay.
My invention consists in a hank composed oi' two pieces, of symmetrical form, pivoted together, so that when open it may be passed over the stay andwhen clasped or shut will inclose it, while at the same time the outer ends of the hank, formed of two sister-hooks, will pass through the eyelet in the sail and inclose its leach,77 the two portions of the hank being locked together, when closed, by a spring-pin.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, A is the hank, composed of two symmetrical portions, a b,pivoted together at c so as to allow of theil` being thrown open, as seen in Fig. 1, in which position the hank may be readily placed over the stay B. The portions a b are now brought together and their ends 4 4l passed through the eyelet 5 of the sail O, when a spring-pin, d, is passed through the openings e in the portions al b, Fig. l, locking them together. The stay is thus inclosed within one part, 6, of the hank, while the other part 7 incloses the eyelet of the sail and its leach 8, as seen in Fig. 2. By means of my invention I am enabled to provide a fastening which is at all times secure and reliable, and which may be readily applied without unfastening the end of the stay, while the cost of the lacing and the time and labor of applying the same incident to the method of securing the ordinary hank is thereby avoided.
I have in the foregoing spoken of the applica tion of my improved hank to stay-sails only, but it is evident that it may be used to advantage for securing other fore and aft as well as square sails without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described hank, composed of two parts, aand b, hinged at c, with theportions which hold the leach formed as sister-hooks, held in position by the pin d or its equivalent, substanas and for the purpose described.
