Description

W 55%@ @MM Il. PETERS, FHOTGLITHOGRAFKER, WASHINGTON. D. C

Letters Patent No. 91,308, dated June 15, 1869.
IMPROVED FASTENING "POR HAND-REIN' S.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.'
ing part of' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the ends of a paix' of reins having my improved fastening 'applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a section through the centre of the same when united together.
This invention relates to an improved fastening for the ends of reins, and consists in uniting them together by means of a knob or stud of peculiar construction, which is to be used in lieu of the ordinary buckle heretofore employed for this purpose.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describethe mauner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawngs- A B represent the ends of a pair of hand-reins, in each of which is formed a circular opening, and a slit, the opening and slit in the eudot the rein B being for the reception of a stud, C, of metal or other' suitable material, provided with a broad circular base, a, and a dange, b, at or near its centre, which serve to hold the stud'n plac/e within the end of the rein, the distance of the base a from the flange b being carefully made to correspond to the thickness of the rein, in order that the base a may be kept snugly in contact therewith, thereby avoiding any possibility of catching in the dee, while the diameter of the flange b is suoli as to allow of the stud being entirely removed, as is necessary if it should be desired to apply a frein-holder to the rein. This could not be done if the stud was permanently secured to the rein B by rivets or otherwise, or if an ordinary buckle was used to secure the ends of the reins together. Y
The upper end d, ofthe stud, is of the form seen in g. 2, being rounded and bevelled on both sides, so as to admit of its readily passing in and out of the opening and slit in the rein A, when it is desired to secure the ends ofthe reins together, as seen in fig. 2, or separate them, as seen in iig. 1.
Instead of the smaller end d, of the stud C, being of a circular forni in cross-section, it may be made oblong, if preferred, and answer the same purpose. By the use of the above-described stud as a fastening, the reins may be easily uutwsted without unfasteniug, by turning either one around the stud as a centre, a slidicient number of times to edect the desired end.
My improved method of fastening the ends of reins as described, prevents the necessity of cutting them away near the ends, as is usual 'where an ordinary buckle is used, and which tends to weaken the reins and render them more liable to bend and break at these points.
ing, so thatthe reins and buckle may be sufficiently narrow to pass easily through the dee of the saddle.
y My improved method of fastenin g, as above described, allows the rein to he made of its full width to tbeextreme end, as seen in fig. 1, thereby saving the time and labor' of cutting away the leather, or folding it down, as is the casein the bu' hand-rein or folded hand-rein where buckles are used. This method of fastening is not intended to be confined to reins, as it may be used to advantage in other parts of saddles or harness; for instance, iu bridles, or wherever buckles are now used, it being a much cheaper and neater fasten-ing than a buckle, and equally as secure and reliable.
Claim.
, What'I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The within-described stud, when used as a substitute for a buckle in fastening reins and other parts of saddlery or harness, substantially as set forth.
2. Also, the stud C, in combination with the reins A B, when constructed substantially as described.
LUCIUS C. CHASE.

HENRY F. CHASE, J. H. BURLEIGH.
This cutting away of the ends of the reins is necessary where a buckle is used as a fasten-
