Letters Patent No. 95,004,
dated September 21, 1869,.
- [MPRovED Box-Loop Fon CARRIAGE-Tops.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making partof the same.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, CHARLES H. DAVIS,
euse, in the county of Onondaga, York, have invented a new of Syraand State of New and improved Box-Loop for use' on Oarriage-Tops; and vI do hereby declare? that the following is a full and exact description therei' of, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- .Figure 1 is a perspective View of 'the loop, with straps and 4buckles complete, attached to a piece of leatherorscctio'ofacarriageltop, B. j Figure 2 is a perspective Iview ofthe loop ready for use.' f v Figure 3 is a plate or cap, used on the back or in- Figurc 4 is a cross-sectional View of the whole com- Siinilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.V k
l\[y'iuveutou has for its object to improve the construction of' box-loops for carriage-trimmiugs; and
It consists in fhrmiug'the loops from one piece of metal, either cast or struck up, with a series 'ot' lugs upon its.lo\\'c1c lgcs, which lugs or spurs are passed through openings formed in the carringe-top, and through openings in a nie-tal stifeuing-plate, placed upon the under surtrce ofthe leather.
The lugs are then bent down or clinched upon the metal plate, thereby securely fastening the box-loop Box-loops, as' usually constructed, are .made of leather, and either sewed or riveted in place, and are liablel 'to he heut ounof shape, and torn from the riv- 'and through holes x x, formed in lwhile, by my improvement, the box is easily applied, land not liable to get out of order.
In the accompanying drawings- A is a metal loop, either cast or struck up from sheet-metal, preferably the latter.
When formed of sheet-metal, the blanks are cut out by suitable dies, leaving spurs or lugs H H upon two opposite edges. lheyare then bentiuto the form shown iu lig; 2, to .produce the loop.
D is a strap or straps, each end passing around and through the buckle E, and secured, iu any proper manner, to the piece B of the carriage-top.
The piece B is provided with a series of'holes upon each side of the strap D, corresponding in numberand position to the spurs H upon the loop.
The loop is applied to the piece B, by passing the spurs through these holes, as shown in the drawing, the metal plate (l, laid against the inner surface of the piece B.
The lugs are then bent down surface of this plate, thereby rmlyseeuriug the loop in place without the aid of rivets.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe box-loop A, when formed as described, with the lugs or spurs H upon its edges, and. applied to a carriage-top, by passing said lugs through the same, and through the metal plate C, and `then bending them down upon the surface of said plate, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
